the same can be done without expense to the city, or
charge on the relief fond, finally passed both bran-
ches.

could not escenaln. In the Common the vote stood,
Yeas, 15; Nayi.l.
So. the city fathers have at length consented to en
lighten the people as to the disposition made of the
relief fund, provided it can be done without expense
to the city. The majority have suddenly became
economical. Notlong since they increased the salaries
of several office holders fifty dollars each, end crew

Art attempt was made by some malicious peruse to
blow up the building next to Empire Block on Superi•
or street. Seseral families occupy the upper nodes.
and had the attempt been successful, several lives
would have been lost. The basement story was used
for a Grocery store. and it appears that a keg of pow
der had been placed in the front part of the storeroom
under the counter, and covered with foot mats and a
sprinkling, of Lo-e:rnfo co Matches, an WI to be of rea
dy and crick combustion. Mena 12 o'clock, a Jense
smoke was seen issuirg from the store, the alarm of
fire was raised, and the flames immediately extinguish'
ed, when the powder. as above descrilard, wan found.
The mats Urn, nearly consumed, and the keg burned
nearly through in several places. The matter is un•

In the 11.mto the debate on the Oregon question ire
cidentally, yesterday, was 'mimed. The form
of the question it now so far tnuditied, es to confine it
exclusively to the question of reference, the addition
al motion fora epeciul order having been withdrawn
by Mr Iltiralson. The indications in favor of un im
mediate notice to Great Britain seem to gather
strength as the debate proceeds, most of the speakers
to-day basing expressed themselves in favor of that
step, at the bead of whom was the chairman of the
Committees on Foreign Affairs, (Mr. C 1 Ingersoll.)
A temark by that gentleman seem■ to justify,the in
ference, that a bill presiding fot such notice will be
reported before the lapse of many days. The debate
is thrown over until Monday, the fluor being in pus.
