Rice Garland, one of the J udges of the Supreme Coot t Louisiana, had been charged with a serious crime. We learn from the Picayune that no preliminary examination of the case took place on the 10.,h inst., which lett no doubt that he was guilty of forgery. The Picayune says: Indeed, it was in testimony, that a. note for '6OOO Was drawn over the signature of John McDonough— , signature subscribed to a complimentary letter which he sent to the Judge, accompanying a present of straw berries or some other trifling gift—the writing shove the signature having been extracted by some chemical process. When the uuthenticitt of the note was dispu ted, Mr. Smith called upon Judge Garland and inform. oil him oldie fact. After some words, the Judge, pretesting that the note was a genuine 0110 refunded a large portion of the money, and accompanied a friend of Mr. Smith's to Mr. Mcfbinough'n home to have the matter explained. Mr. McDonough testified that when he met Judge i Garland be was h gird nod pale as death. He im• ploredhim to 411,,, him and his. family from utter de• sttoetion. Mr. MeD. stated that he was overcome by the supplication of the Judge. aril gave his none for the balance of the money obtained from tine sale of the fin .5, note. About tine time the court cammenceri its session, Judge Garland attempted to commit suicide by jumping nlptine steamboat Sultan into the river. He was res cued by Capt. Wilson. of the steamer F. M. Siteck. before drowning, and after a second time endeavui ing to take his own life, wen cerried home in a state of great exhaustion. A more terrible retribution newer yet ~v, i te"i: an offender against the laws of the land. Himself a high priest of the law, he has fallen under its dreadful demonstrations.
