CORRESPONDENTS.
In ref - erotice to communic.ntionn which may appear
in this page we have one or two remark. to make.—
Vile will i . ert none without the name of the author be
ing flint made known to us, and when Inserted, muetel•
ways be taken as expre, , nlveof the views of the writer,
and not the editor of thin paper, unless the views no
expreased are editorially ternailied upon and approved.
Num—There were only two cases before the
Mayor on Saturday morning both; paid their fines
and travelled. The working system proposed by the
commissioners and Col. Trovillo, has a peculiar effect
upon the candidates for Mount Airy; they decline run
ning.
TREK CLOCKS —As We were looking out of Out
window the other day we saw four or fire eases of
clocks, tumbling out the third loft on the side walk of
our friend Davis the auttioneell at the same time we
heard the woe& of going! vine! guile!! and sure c
nough they did go to pieces.
THAT Jump x.B. —Thera was a good deal of inquiry
00 Saturday, w ho owned that "jumper" that appeared
in Fifth street. It was quite a novel constructed thing,
bring two hickory poles, for the runners and shafts,
■nd a log of wood supported by four upright posts.
The log was lung enough to carry three double, horse
back fashion. It is ahead of any thing we have seen
in this country for a long time.

From our Washington Correspondent
'IEURISD•Y EYENING, Dec 4, 1845
But little has transpired to-day worthy of note. In
the Senate a communirvion was received frcm the
War Department in answer to a resolution ofthe I 4th
March Inv!, relative to the strengthening of Fort Gra
tiot and other military defences on Lake liuron, which
aas laid upon the table, but trill undoubtedly receive
early attention, from the fact that the British are erec
ting a fort and throwing up strong fortifications at Port
Larima nearly oppeAue Gratio7.
Mr Breese, of Illinois. called up Iris resolution of
the 2d inst. for the suspension of the 34th rule, which
direett that standing committees shall be elected by
ballot. and giving to the President of the Senate the
tiler thin of the committees. This gave rise to a de• ',
bate, in which Messrs Mangum, Allen, Breese and
Benton took part., hick became animated and highly
int , riukting, but I cannot do juvtice to the speakers by
