FRAN Hayset AND NILXICO. — By the arrival of
the Emprestuln, Capt Collins, the New Orleans Pic
ayune has fun files of flavanna papers to the Itch inst.
On the 6th inst the royal 'mail steamer Medway sr
trod from Vera Cruz, with $600,000 in specie. Her
dates from the city of Alexico are only to the 28th ult .
—two days later than we have received direct.
The Mexican troops stationed at Jalapa, which,
according to some estimates, amounted to 4000 men,
have been 43-Caere , ' into cantonments at Pain de
Ovejas, a mall place half way between Vera Cru 7 l
aid the former city. The general in command was
'tweeted daily in Vera Cruz when the Medway sailed, j
intending to remain there.
The incident in regard to the sailing of the St Mary's
(rota Vera Crue, and the offer of aid from the Monte
soma, is mentioned in the Havana papers.
The death of an illosttious prelate of the Catholic
church, the Archbishop of Guatemala and Bishop of
Havana, is announced in the Dario of the 10th inst.
We find some speculations in regard to the sugar
crop in the Diorio. The writer is of opinion that the
amount of the product of the island has been exagge
rated for purposes-of speculation. The writer offers a
species of wagerthat the crop will fall short of 700,000

Governor Wright, says the Albany Atlas, has commu

murder of Deputy Sherifateele. In arriving at the
above decision, he has been influenced by no moder
ate estimate of the degree of guilt involving in the
murder of Steele. He sets forth the offence in:its full
magnitude, and does not conceal the public necessity
which calls for an atonement commensurate with so

Matthew went unwillingly to college, and then, on his
return, insisted on taking his place as partner with my
father. "1 can visit Europe, dear uncle," he said,
"when I am older;" and I saw his face color, and hi.
eyes brighten, as he and my father looked at me, and
then exchanged glances. Here wee "one of the pret- ,
cleat distresses immaginable," and I gave myself up to
the full enjoyment of my misery.
"I will never marry Cousin Matthew," I exclaimed
in pettish anger, when I had reached my room. ••No,
no,—they can never make me!" and then I wept a. i
though I anticipated being locked up and kept on bread
and water. But no such luxury of misery was in store
for me. My gond old father would have stared at tire I
bare proposition of urging me against my will. He
would have been delighted to have seen us married to
each other, but would never have forced me. But it
pleased me to famy differently, and I Imedrunder the

ideal if I had not been so blind. He was handsome
if he was uncouth; clever in mental abilities, and gentle
and leving. But. I shut my eyes to true happiness.—
To me he, was only plain Matthew Bates, whom I
would not be forced to many.
Time passed on. I entered society, though only
seventeen. My teachers were retained, it is true—
but only as a ceremony were the daily lessons and
the rich and beautiful bliss Lee wu soon surrounded
by admirers, and hurried with gay engagements.—
Cousin Matthew looked quietly on; bnt spoke never a
