Ta• Wasra•tr Ustvitststrr.—lt will be seen by •a advertisement in another column, that the Trustees have engaged rooms,. temporarily, in Messrs. Davie and &VDUs buildings r eorner of Wood and Third sts., and will resume exercises on Monday morning next. We owe this fact with sincere pleasure. This insti cation has for many years sustained a very high literary mutation, and from our knowledge of those now charged with its management, we feel warranted in &mitring the public that its usefulness will not be in the slightest degree impaired. The trustees Mere purchased a lot upon which to erect a new building from War. M'Ktritint, Esq.; the site is immediately in the rear of that gentleman's iessidence, on the bank of the Allegheny river. • The par building is to. be fifty feet (rout on Duquesne !Vey, ninety feet deep, and three stories high. The building will be twenty feet from the tine. of Duquesne Way. Tie apartments for the preparatory school and the coleriate Department, will be in the rear of the structure—the preparatory school room upon the ground door—the culegiate department above it.— They will be spacious and well adapted to the purpo ses intended, and will be withdrawn seventy feet from the line of the street, thus securing a quiet and reti red position. The whole plan of the building is ex cellent. The arrangements are such, we think, as cannot fail to secure comfort to Professors and Stu. dents. IMPORTANT FROM TEXAS. Advanceof the Mezieans on Gen Taylor's Troops! The Louisiana Volunteers on the March. "We hasten to lay before our readers the important intelligence we have just recei +ed. relative to the movement of troops for the purpose of protecting the newly acquired territor7 of Texas from the dan gers of a projected Mexican invasion. "Gen Gaines. now in our city, having received au thentic information to the effect that ten thousand Mexican troops were within eight days march of Gen Taylor, who is posted at St Joseph's Island, immedi ately despatched a message to Gov Montrm, at Pasts Christian, claiming a requisition of two regiments of volunteers, (of ten companies each,) one to consist of infantry and one of riflemen; and two companies of artillery, with eight field pieces. The requisiti on was immediately granted, and will be put forthwith into execution. "The two volunteer regiments are to be stationed at the forts and barracks on the Gulf subject to the orders of the Government, end the United States troops at present in garrisons at those stations are to be immediately transferred to Texas. The two companies of volunteer artillery will leave on Wednesday,on board the atemahip A laba madogether with four companies of United States troops, (7th reg iment, infantry.) two of which are expected to-mor row morning, from Paes Christian, under Captain. Moore and Holmes. The Picnyune, after announcing the facts contained in the Extra Bee, say.: "The requisition was, of course, immediately responded to, and will be put forthwith into execution. We understand that the whole artillery force of thisciry—a most effective and well armed corps—have volunteered their services, and that they have been accepted. "Ow uninformed infantry companies are not in the meantime, listlessly resting on their arms; calls fur meetings of the officers of the Washington Regiment ani Louisiana Voltmteers may be seen in our paper to day. In fact the question will not be 'Who will be suffered to remain at home?' but 'who will he permit ted to enrol themselves amongat them, the defenders of their countrymen beyond the Sabine?'—Before to morrow's sun ascends the meridian, the draft, in mer cantile phrase, will be honored. and were it nemetical ly ten times the amount which it is. it would be met with the same alacrity and good will?" From the Baltimore Republican. WASHINGTON, Aug 23, 1845. The U States ts. IVet Rufus Elliott.—At the conclusion, yesterday evening, of Mr Hobnn's splen did speech, which in elegance of diction. pnrity of sentiment, boldness ofmetaphor and rhetorical beautf, has seldom, if ever, been surpassed—the presiding Justices announced that their decision would be giv en at 12 o'clock to-tia); and long before the hour ar rived you might have seen our citizens wending their way, in breathless anxiety, to the Court House, so deep is the hold that Nit case bus taken on their feelings. The moth of their deliberations is, that Elliott's , ft.e is not bailable, and that he must be remanded to jail to await his trial at the approaching sitting of the Criminal Court, in November. The decision of the Justices was received with mingled sensations of pleasure and dissatisfaction by the large concourse of spectators in attendance. Some pronounced it advi sable and prudent, whilst many condemned it as un just and severe, end unsupported by the evidercn or the law. My own opinion is, that the magistrates wished to avoid the responsibility of his release, and it is confidently expected that a hearing will be had be fore his Honor, Judge Cranrh, and the impression seems that bail will he accepted. Young Elliott looks very differently from what he did previously to this 'unfortunate event, and when the Justices announced their determination to takeloto bail, he changed color, and seemed deeply affected. I have no doubt he bitterly laments the death of his young associate, who rushed upon a fate that all unite in de ploring. JUSrITIA. FROM MEXICO VIA KEY Near.—The Chnrleston Courier publishes thc following extract of a letter, da ted "The news from Vera Ct uz, via Havana, is of VI very belligerent nature. The President of Mexico has recommended to the Legislative Chamber an im mediate declaration of war. Our government also has been wide awake; within the few days past, the steamer Princeton, sloop of mar John Adams and Marion, and brig Porpoise have passed this port, bound to the westward, to reinforce the Gulf squadron, which, together, will form a force strong enough to blow the Castle of St. Juan de Pilots out of water.— We have no protection here at all, not even a revenue cutter. The news from Vern Ct ex is up to the 2d of August, which is much later I expect than you have in Charleston. The fortfication here progresses very slowly. The captain of engineers has lost his princi ple draughtsman, Mr. Leyer, a young Palander of great promise—he was thought a great deal of by the corps of engineers as a draughtsman.
