THE WATER WITCH.
The Water Witch, so long and anxiously expected,
has arrived at last, and brings no tidings of war, but
mighty big, threats on the part of our Mexican frrentis.
She sailed from Vela Cl/7. on the sth instant, and ar
rived here to day.
W e have received regular files of newspapers from
Vera Cruz up to the lilt instant, and from the city of
Mexico to the 30th tilt , both indosive.
W m was not actually derlarerl; but private letters
from Vera Crnz state that the general opinion was that
hostilities would cettainly ensue.
The Congress was still occupied with the bill to de
clare war, end raise 11t11i,000,000 by loan.
We are indebted to toe kindness of a commercial
house for the following letters from Vein Cruz:
"V ga• CRUZ, Aug 4, 1895.
"The differences existing between the U States and
this country occupy at present the public mind, and
may eventually loud to war—for which purpose, this
government asked an appropriation of $15,000,000.
Permission has been grant-al to contract a loan to
th at amount. IL will be very difficult, however, to
raise that sum. We are therefore still in hopes that
the difficulties in question will be peaceably adjust
ed, and the commercial intercourse remain undistur
bed."

"No change has yet occurred in our inte AUGUST rnal poli
tics, though a miniiterial crisis !Mtn"s to be at band.
Popular attention is now directed to the ensuing pres

Chambers a declaration of war against the United
States, vet it appears that no such formal step a ill be

There were rumors in Mexico '3 n the 31st ult. of
change of ministry. El Sig& dismindes from giving
any credence to them, thinking it very tuilikOly that
when the presidential election tuns to t a k e place on
the L,I lowingday, and the term of trtEre of the present
admini-t ration was so near at hand, that it should
:.trike out an 2, new coats° of policy, El Sigh, all rib-
IltPe4 the rumors to the attacks of Senor Rotes upon the
government.
P. MULVANY
It is impossible to form any definite opinion as to
the result of the election. Gomez hirias is represent
ed a. the most popular candidate. Gen Herrera has
the strength of the press on his side, and Gen Ain-route
is very anxious to he chosen, and has volunteered to
fight Texas. We need not speculate on the matter.
Many of the troops under A t isle had deserted—be
ing half starved, we presume. To stimulate the io•
habitants to activity in arresting the runaways, the
genet al ()Wets $.5 a head fur every one brought in.
El Sight is much occupied with a defence of the
course pursued by the administint ion, in offering to ac
knowledge the independence of Texas, in order to
prevent her annexation to the United Stlites. This is
evidently, in the eyes of the populace, the vulnerable
point in the policy of the government.
Capt Trennis reports that when he left Vera Crust,
there were no American vessels in port. On his se
cond day out, (the 7th inst.,) he saw an American
vessel of war bearing down towards Vera Cruz; but,
from the distance, he could not make her out. There
were lying at Sacriflicios one English, one Spanish,
and one French vessel of war, when the Water Witch
sailed, and the American squadron was momentarily
expected.
The Lexington Afair.—We were yesterday in
formed by a gentleman who left Lexington on Tues
day morning, that the cull for a county meeting at the
court house, was responded to by the attendance of
from 2.500 to 3,000 persons. The meeting was or
ganized by the appointment of a Chairman and Sec
retary. A committee of sixty was subsequently ap
pointed to wait upon C M Clay and report to him the
sentiments of the assembled multitude. They did to,
and Mr Clay delivered up his office into their heads.
The printing mulct tali, were then very quietly packed
and boxed up, shipped br Ow railroad to Frankfort,
and from thence to this city, to the order of Mr Clay.
Thus was quelled the excitement whieil Litt fokic
one time, to end in bloodshed.—Cin. Ens., AiB 21.
