-DatissittO.--A man named JOHN' IVFIERftf, was
drowned in the Allegheny river, on Saturday after
noon. It is said he was in the river bathing; the
body was found a short time after, near the place
where he was last seen. He has left a wife and
two' children. His remains were followed to the
'gratiii 'yesterday afternoon, by the military and a large
concourse of citisens.

ted by a large majority—near 400.
L'ln the city of Louisville the whip have given
a majority of 701 for their candidate for Congress,
We have not the full returns from the country.; but
Miller, one of the democratic candidates is certainly
elected; and the reported majorities give Brynn, the
other democratic candidate, a majority of one vote
over the highest whig candidate. The contest, how
ever, is P o close that it is uncertain whether Bryan
or Jones (whip) is elected. Last year both candi
dates from this county (Jefrers9o) were whip.
Nuttalls majority over Thomasson in the county will
be 60 or 70.
In the counties of Madison, Garrard, Rockcastle
and Estil (White's district) Melten (whig) was 1193
ahead of Adams (whig,) and 361 ahead of Martin
(Dem )nn the first day of the election. There are
ten mbereounties in the district, and strong hopes ate
entertained that Martin is elected.

NEWS FROM MEXICO,
By the arrival yesterday, of the schooner Equity,
Captain Smith from Matamotas, we have dates from
that city to the 21st of July. Among her passengers
was Theodore A Maltby, one of the Texian Mier
prisoners. He was badly wounded in the head at that
desperate and sanguinary fight, and, flier lying many
months in Mexican hospitals, has finally reached his
knew native land in safety.
By this arrival Int received no papor., but verbally
we learn that there ere but 500 or 600 badly fed
troops in the neighborhood of Ma'am' as--discon
tented fellows, who would run away at once if they
where to go.
Oar informant states that Gen. Paredes was at San
Luis Potosi when he came through. and had in the
neighborhood of 5,000 troops with him, These %vete
tolerably well uniformed, and the horses of the cavalry
were in fair condition. After arriving at Monterey.
our Informant heard that Paredes was on his march to
wards that place. He has always been intemperate
though a brave officer, and is said to been now more
addicted to liquor than ever.
Gen Ariste,who is in bad health, is still at Monter cy
and has about 3,000 half-starved soldiers with him.—
T hey are mostly cavalry; but their horses are represen•
ted as mere skeletons, not having had any other food
than grass fur some time, and that being indifferent in
the neighborhood. Arista can hardly obtain money
enoogh from the government to purchase provision
even for himself and officers.
MARCH or THF. SVCONH DRAGOONS.—The 2d
regiment of United States dragoons, under colonel
Toiggs, took up the line of march for Texas from
Noichiroches on the 25th ult—last Friday. The
Chniniele says that they are to be stationed at San
Antonio de Bexar; and we would remark, that a
more healthy or beautiful location could hardly be
found. We would give a tolerable good horse to see
the dragoons, with Cioffi! band in advance, ride post
Flare's Rancho m the Gundaloupe, and afterwards
enter the old and romantic town of San Antonio.—
Will there not be excitement among the Mexican
portion of the population of n place that hes stood
some half dozen sieges within the last ten dears, and
which has been alternately in possession of the Tex
inns and theirnwn people? We shall look for an
account of their entry with interest.
