'We learn with pleasure that Allegheny county

justly awarded to Mr Davirr, the county Treasurer,
as the two senior Commissioners, Messrs. Cunning
kaasarri Forsyth. They, we learn, all patriotically
exerted themselves, to maintain the credit of the good
old Commonwealth.
Flint.—Yesterday morning about three o'clock,
our citizens were aroused by the cry of fire. It
was found to be in a brick house near the corner of
Irwin and Penn streets; but little damage was done.
Our active firemen were on the ground in a very
short time after the alarm was given.
DrsTRICT ATTORNST OF THS U. S.—We are grat

SON; Esq , gives general satisfaction. In addition to
being compel ant and worthy, he is one of the cleverest
fellows in this District.

THE TROOPS.
Tho fourth regiment, from Camp Salubrity. passed
down on Thursday evening last, on the steamers Ito
dolph and Yazoo. The third, from Fort Jesup, passed
down to-day, on the steamers Cote Joyeuso and Do
Soto.
The officers and men are burning wish enthusiasm
to see the Rio Grande; and should they have a tilt
with Mexico or her allies, they will assuredly give a
good account of themselves.
The Arkansas Intelligencer says that the same
spirit animates the officers and men at Fort Towson.—
The trial of Col. Harney by a court-martial there, for
improperly flogging soldiers in Florida, wan brought to
a close on the 17th ult. It was thought that gallant
colonel would he acquitted.
Gov Yell. just fram Texas, informs the editor of the
Intelligencer, that a cordon of forts will be thrown
from Fort Washita to the Rin Grande—Fort Washita
to remain, a fort tube established on the head-waters
of the Trinity or Colorado, and one to by lorated on
the Rio Grande. San Antonio will he the place of
headquarters. Three regiments will be stationed
there immediately. Hurt-it for our side!

A FRENCH FLEET
The N 0 Republican of the 18th inst. says: "A
report reached town yesterday from the Ralir.e , that a
French fleet of fourteen sail had been spoken in the
Gulf, standing down towards the Mexico coast. The
recent difficulty between the Mexican government and
the French minister furnishes some sort of reason fur
a movement of this kind.

Prospectus oftheNewLibrary of Law and
Equity,
TTNDER the direction of FRANCIS J. Tnomkr,
1-1 Esq. of Philadelphh, lion ELLIS Lewis, of
Lancaster, and WiLsoN INVCANDLEss, Esq. of Pitta
burzh.
This work contains the best productions of English
law authors, wilhout regard to priority of claim on
the part of any American publisher. Such books are
now notoriously too dear. The reason is, that as fast
ns they appear they become monopolies in the hands
of booksellers in the Atlantic cities. Under the plea
of right acquired by the addition of notes of Ameri
can decisions, the latter claim an undivided title to
those works, and set a burthensome price on them.—
The publishers of the work now ofr•red to the profes
sion througout the Union, will not respect such titles,
but will re-print the standard British law hooks as
fast as they eminate horn the London market. Should
new editions of the works of such writers as Starkie,
the Chittys. Stephen and Archbold, appear, they shall
also be included; and Digests of Equity and Law de
cisions—works which have been studiously kept out of
the Law Library published at Philadelphia—shall
have a place In the proposed new one, together with
every new valuable English treaties on Chancery or
Common Law.
e ' This work will be is.ued Monthly-in numbers
of 150 puzn s , printed on fine white paper and good
new long primer type, at seven dollars per annum,
payable half yearly.
