the esteem of all wbo knew him.

15 DAYS LATER FROM EUROPE
The steamer Britannia arrived at Boston on Satur
day morning, in 14i days from Liverpool, having
been detained by ice. She brings intelligence to the
4th inst. There is nothing <f importance received
by her. We make up the following summary from
Wilmer & Smith's European Times, received by Ad-
ems & Co's express.
The American Provision trade has been dull, the
amount of business transacted being con•iderahly un
der the average. Beef hasbeen in limited request. so
has pork and lard. Cheese, however, of a good
quality, has maintained previous rates, but the bulk
of the stock in of an inferior description.
The Iron trade is somewhat unsettled, hut fair rates
are demanded and maintained. A large failure has
taken place in this town during the week, and rumor,
whit her !lamin] tongues, is making free with the
names of others. In such a buFirtess, where the
speculation has been so numerous, it is impossible to
say what a day may bring forth.
COLON EL ToDD.—IVe have the pleasure of stating
that the American Minister at St. Petersburg, so de
servedly popular in the Russian capital. has been ap
pointed a member u 1 the Imperial Agricultural Socie
ty—an honor never before conferred upon a foreigner.
The correspondence between Lord Aberdeen, the
Foreign Secre:ary, and the Spanish Ambassador, the
Duke de Sotomayer, relative to the admission into
England of the above grown sugars of Cuba end Por
to Rico, has been laid on the tables of Pat !lament.
Accounts reached Calcutta of the total destruction
by fire, of the American ship Virginia, at about 10
A. M., of the sth inst. about twenty-five or thirty
miles to the south yard of the OW er floating light
All hands were saved except the supercargo. She
was homeward bound.
The Right Rev Dr Kenrick, Catholic Bibhop of
Philadelphia, has returned from Rome, where lie wns
most graciously rec. ived by the Pope. On Tuesday
week he left Dublin for Liverpool, and_ will proceed
immedi itely to tie United States.

gainst what they consider the literary piracies which
exist there.
It is said that the Wesleyan Meauxlists of Great
Britain are ohnitt to disown any connection with those
of the United Suites who are tdaseholders.
Gen Armstrong, the new American Consul, arrived
Liverpool on the '2Bth ult. by the Great Western.
in The prorogation of Parliament, it is confidently ex
pected, will take place about the middle of August,
niter which the Queen and Prince Albert will leave for
Germany.
The Madrid Gazette poblisher a despatch, announ
cing the capture of Cabrera, the famous Carlist Gener
al, by the French authorities. He was taken on board
a fidling smack near Locate.
The Paris National states that M Guizat had td
new attack of illness, which caused soma alarm to his
friends.
The United Sery ico Gazette states. that in conse
quence of the malsacre of the crew of the Wasp, on
the coast of Africa, it ha 4 been determined to give no

for the making of Iron either with Charcoal or Coke.
