of the relief fuel of claims under two thousand Dol

Mr P. C. MARTIN, whose Fruit and Liquor Store
on Water Street was destroyed by the great fire, is a
gain in the full tide of successful business at his old
location. He has just received a large and excellent
stock of Fruits, Liquors, and every other article in his
line, which we know he wilt dispose of at very reason
able prices.
Host.—We would invite attention to a notice sign
ed by Mr. E. S. Nif.AL, calling a meeting of the Fire
Companies to inspect and prove their Hose. This is
an important matter, and the Firemen deserve credit
for their prompt attention to it.

EDUCATION IN Ncw YORK.—The number of Col
leges in the Stated New York is 12, Students, 935;
of Academies and Grammar Schools, 501; Scholars,
34,563; of Primary and Common Schools, 18,874;
Scholars, 501,150; Scholars at public charge, 20,200.
There are 48,715 white persons over twenty years of
age who cannot read and write. There are 391 Pe.

owners of the steamers Michigan and IVisconsin, are
determined to drive from the nude the Steamboat Lake
Erie ; their course has been and now continues in full
vigor to monopolize the whole business; they were not
satisfied with having the lion's share of trade and
choice of hours in leaving Pittsburgh and Beaver, but
now publicly and plainly say they will drive the Lake
Erie from the river—a generous public, will decide.—
