Qatar Fiat Is MAD/SON, lA.—A fire broke out
in Madison, on Wednesday night last, about midnight,
in Smith's store, under the first Presbyterian church,
which, with i*.a contents, goods, account books &c.,
ware consumed. The Hardware store, under the
church, was also destroyed; the fire then took hold of
the three story brick house adjoining the church,
spreading up Main Cross street, to the three story
brick occupied by Mr Stapp, destroying all the build
ings in the rear of the church to the alley—then up the
alky to Mulberry street, destroying the Comb factoty,
Shannon's tobacco house, and Ford and Mulby's
pretniaee—Marsh's coffee house was mccb damaged;
shoot twenty houses w..reburned. The jail, it is said,
is filled with persons arrested for stealing goods. Esti
mated loss $lOO,OOO. We have not learned whether
there was arty insurance.

the committee proposed the following questions to a

Ans. Victuals and drink. What are the uses of a
lever? (Boy is nonplused.) If you hnd a log in a

We, the undersigned. having been present at a test
made this afternoon, of a Fire Proof Chest, manafac
tured by Mr. Jae. Cochran, certify, that said cheat
remained in the fire, which was fed and kept up during
