SBURGH, FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 1845
(IF Our readers will excuse the want of variety
in this day's paper. To many of them, however, we
have no doubt, the statement of the County accounts
for the past year, will prove interesting.
A SUP eßsTiTtous Noviont•—We have often heat
of a mode of discovering drowned persons, which is
alledged, by those who practise it, to be a neverlail
log expedient. It is to take a shirt of the deceased,
and drop it into the water near the spot where be went
down—the garment, it is said by those who have
faith in the charm, will sink at the spot where the bo
dy lies. We were gravely told that one of the two
persons drowned theother day, was found by resorting
to this means. His shirt was dropped into the river,
floated down some distance, and sunk. They drag
ged fot him at the spot, and the body was brought up !
We do not. know whence this superstitions notion was
derived, but it is much better burning the people
on the suspicion of practising witchcraft. There is
one difficulty in the way of its becoming generally
practised. Many a poor fellow who drops or throws
himself into the river, leaves no odd shirt behind him
`with which the experiment might be tried.
QInaTIONS TOR Dra►ttaa SOCICTISII.—A flash
lovable club some where down East have beee die_
cuseing—" which is the worst, a bad egg or a bad
oyster." It was finally seuled, that the President
should eat three of each, and then decide the matter.
Another question that has called forth much forensic
` talent, is, "does a man when drowned go the way of
I all flesh or of all fish." The President said the speak
ers had found the very bottom of their subject. But
the best question for debate that we ever heard propo
-1 sed, was, "whether a chimera, ruminating in vacuum,
devours second intentions." This was proposed in
the Knickerbocker some years ago, but has never been
,settled to the satisfaction of the searchers after knowl
edge.
