with the tower stamp on her, "cheated at a boardin'
school." She astonishes the natives roundabout
where the old folks live, and makes 'em stare agin,
sheirsoimpraved. She plays beautiful on the piano,
'two pieces, they were crack pieces, lathed hi-tiler the
eye and ear of the master, but there is a secret no
body knows but her'—she can't play notbin'

She sings two or three songs. the last lessons hunt to
school, and the last she ever will learn. She has
two or three beautiful drawin're butthere is a secret
here, ton,—the master finished 'em, and she can't
do another. She speaks French beautiful ; but it's
:fortunate she ain't in France now, so that secret is
- safe. She is a very agreeable gal, and talks very
-pleasantly, for she has seen the world. She was to
'Loudon for a few weeks; saw the last play, and
"knows a great deal about the theatre. She has been
to the Opera once, and has seen Celeste and Fanny
Eetler, and beard La Banc and Crisi, and is a judge

Sans Slick in England.
Li'holesale Slaughter of IVitehes.—During the
- seventeenth century 40,000 persons are said to have
been put to death fur witchcraft to England alone!
in Scotland the number was probably, in proportion
to the population, much greater; for it is certain that
even in the last forty years of the sixteenth century,
- the executions were not fewer than 17,000. In 1734
the madness may be said to have reached its highest
pitch, for in that year occurred the celebrated case
of the Lancashire witches,in which eight innocent
persons were deprived of their lives by the incohe
rent falsehoods of a mischievous urchin. The civil
war,far from suspending the persecution, seems, if pos
sible, to have redoubled it. In 1644-95, the in
famous Mathew Hopkins was able to earn a comfor
table subsistence by the profession of witch finder,
which he exercised, not indeed without ocasional
suspicion, but still with general success. And even
twenty years later the delusion was still sanctioned
by the most venerable name of the English law; for
it was 1614 that the excellent Sir Mathew Hale, af
ter a trial conducted with his usual good sense, con
demned two witches, both of whom were executed

Elllodicated Vapor Bath.
COPY OF A LETTER FROM DES. LAWRENCE AND
HIARICKSON
New Lebanon, State of New York.
WORTHY FRL6ND:—Having made a thorough trial
of the Medicated Vavor Bath for four months past, in
our societies in New Lebanon and Watervliet, we think
it but justice to state, that we consider it a valuabie
improvement in the healing art. Its power in reduc
ing both chronic and acute inflamation, also in remov
ing spasms, is certainly very great. In cases of ob
structed perspiration, it is unquestionably the safest
and best remedy that we have ever seen. Several
persons in our society, who were scarcely free from a
catarrhal affection during most of the winter months
for several years past, have found permanent relief by
using the Bath a few times; and the predisposition to
take cold, as it is commonly termed, seems to be whol
ly removed. Obstructed perspiration, is certainly in
our changeable climate, one of the most fruitful sour
ces of disease, and any remedy that is capable of re
moving the predisposition to it, must be considered a
great blessing to mankind; and as such we do not hesi
tate to recommend the Medicated Vapor Bath.

La! what makesiout teeth so unusually width?
Quoth Josh's dulcinia tohim t'utber night,
To make yourn look so, with a grin, replied Josh,
bought you a bottle of Thorn's Tooth Wash,
'Tis the best now in use, so the gentlefolks say,
And since they have tried this, cast all others away
But to prove it the bestto make the teeth shine,
Look again, my dear Sal, at tke lustre of mine.
Then try this great tooth wash,
The Teaberry tooth wash.
And see if this tooth wash of Thorn's is not fine.
Having tried Dr. " Thorn's Tea Bony Tooth Wash,"
and become acqtutintedwith theingredients of its com
position, (cheerfully say, I consider it one of the safest,
as it is one of the most pleasant tooth washes now in
use. DAVID HUNT, Dentist.
Pittsburgh, Sept. 15, 1842.
I take pleasure in stating, having made use of
"Thorn's Tea Berry Tooth Wash," that it is one of the
best dentrifices in use. Being in nliquidforin. it com
bines neatness with convenience. While it cleanses
the enamel nod removes the tartar from the teeth, its
perfume yields a fragrance peculiarly desirable.
J. P. TIBBETTS, b.. D.
The undersigned have need "Thorn's Compound
Tea Berry Tooth Wash," and havi found it to be an
extremely pleasant dentrifice, exercising , a meet salu
tary influence over the Teeth and Gums; preserving
those indispensable members from premature decay,
preventing the accumulation of Tartar, and purifying
the Breath. 'Having thoroughly tested its virtues, we
taste pleasurein recommending it to the public, believ
ing it lo be the best article oftliekind now in use.

MOE subscriber having entered into the stove busi-

lic that he intends carrying it on in its various branches
at the warehouse of Messrs. Pennock & Mitchell. No.
460 Liberty street, where he will be prepared to supply
purchasers with any articles in his line. In addition
to other Stoves which be will have on hand, he has
obtained the right to manufacture and sell Hathaway's
Patent Hot Air Cooking Stoves. This stove is pro
nounced superior to any other now in use in the United
States; it is more durable in its construction, and bet
ter adapsed to the use of baking, roasting and cooking,
as it is /mato& very regularly by confining the air in
the stove; and it is a great saving of fuel as well as
labor. I will keep on hand a sufficient number to sup
ply all demands if possible; I have five different sizes,
and will sell them on reasonable terms, according to
sizes. / have now in use upwards of fifty in and about
this city; all pet in use within six months. Being a
ware that the People of Western Pennsylvania have
been imposed upon by the hands:riot ofnew and high

and havirg soon failed and become useless. I will grant
tcerzollll wishing to procure the Hot Air Stove, the
Wnlege of using it a sufficient length of time to prove
its superior quality before I ask them to purchase.
Persons notifying me from a distance by letter, can
have stoves put up it any time, as I have wagon* to
carry them out; I therefore invite Farmers and all per

Mr.: R. DO, &TA. I have in use one of Huh
away's Hot Mr Cooking Sums, which I got from you
last Spring. It affords me much phmsure to tecom
mend it for its excellence. So far as my knowledge
extends, I have oo hesitation in saying it is the best
stove now in use. I need not particularise its merits,
but would advise all disposed to possess an article of
the kind, to adopt the best method of satisfying them
selves, that is, to try it; and I doubt not they will be
satisfied. D. R. MILLER.

Mr. R. Derrivites—Sir:—l 'have bad in use for five
months, ooe of Hathaway's Hat Air Cooking Stoves,
and I lorve.no hesitation in saying it is the best stove
now in use. The various kinds of cooking it is calcu
lated to do at the same time, and the smell quantity
of fuel inquired, makes it an object worthy the atten
tion of all who desire a good stove.
Or I embrace this opportunity to recommend the
Hot Air Cooking Stoves; I have used the one you put
op for tee constantly all summer, and I most say it is
a grand article. I belie ve it is superior to any other
stove now in use in this city. The oven bakes well,
and is large enough to bake four large loaves of bread
at one tinter it also codes very speedily, and it requires
very little coal, !think them worthy the attention of all
who wish a good stove; to such I would say, try them
and prove whet they are.
