In
'the chosen land of freedom and independence,'
men work from sunrise to sunset, thirteen hours all
summer, and half an hour longer (?) all winter—and
therefore it is right. Doi4 he not see, that by his own

the Netherlands, and France, they beat 'the routine in

"What is a billy-roller ? A billy-roller is a heavy
rod, from two to three yards long, and of two inches
diameter, with an iron pivot at each end. Its primal" ,
and proper object is to run on the top of the carding
over the feeding oloth. Its secondary and iutproper
function is to rap little children on the head, making
their heads crack so that you may hear the blow at
the distance of six or eight yard, in spite of the din
and rolling of the machinery.
We bete omit a passage to painful to quota,

DELICATE DILEMMAS.
I was, as usual, strongly recommended, whilst stay
ing at Marron, to take a wife, like Obmed end Ild*-
homed, Rhin hash, Ebin Isaah, and, in feet, all the
ma of my companions: who as usual, had taken to
themselves temporary helpmates. One of the girls
who presented herself to me as a candidate was stated
by her friends to he a very strong woman, and had as
many as four or five husbands. I thought that rather
a strange recommendation; but it was evidently men
tioned that she might find favor in my eyes. I dismiss
ed her very unceremoniously, as if, I did net altogeth
er understand the Proposal; but at the same time,
gave her as proofs of myWgard for her peyote, and
of my strong platonic attachment to herself, a few Ted
beads, and a little paper, that she had asked fur in the
first instance as her dower. It requires some little
address to keep clear of these' unscrupulous ladies;
and I frequently had cause to fear that my eonstant re
jection of their addresses would be construed into e n
affront to the tribes to which they belonged. An Arab
friend of mine, whom I met at Mocambique, named
I I Said Hamra, told me of an adventure of his in the
country of the Illtrzeguahs, some five or six . treeka'

Indian Ocean, at L a mco He had been fined by the

he accordingly walked out; and this caused a much

I he lad treated them with contempt by his haughty
conduct ftwards the girl, and demanded to Mitre. if she
was not good enough for him. Said Hamm in the
end was again mulcted of a lot of brats wire and blue
seed; before he could allay the national indignation,
which his extreme caution had thus excited. Such
delicate dilemmas ate best avoided, as I have before
menaced, by engaging the first old woroao that makes
