.14 now in progress in France with the view of afford
ing abundant supplies of pure water to the city of
Marseilles:
It is under the able direction of Montricher. The
canal that is to supply Marseilles. will derive its wa
ters from the Durace, near to the suspension bridge at
reruns; and this will be conducted by open cutting
and tunneling, fist a distance of 51 miles, through a
most mounttinout and difficult country, until it retich•
the'arid tei tinny of Mai seines, where it will be em-
Played for the supply of the city as well as for irriga
tion and giving activity to vitriol's branches of indus
try, which require water power The section and full
of this canal is calculated to pass eleven tuns of we-
Carpet swam& and its levels are so disposed that this
:quantity of water will arrive near in the city, at the
elevation of four hundred feet above the level of the
sea. Perhaps nn work of this description has been
-attempted, eitlesr in ancient or modern times, more
-hardy in its conception. or more really useful in its ef
fects. Three chains of limestone mountains are al
ready pierced by the ttm miles of tunnels which are re
quired to conduct this stream; and an aqueduct, which
As to convey it across the river Are, (about five miles
from Aix,) is now in construction. Its elevation
above the river will he two hundred and sixty two
feet. The desigal of this gigantic structure is in ex
cellent taste; and as a work of art. it will not suffer
comparison from the famous Pout dit Gard, which it
will much surpass, both in altitude and size. The
estimated cost of this canal is upwards of twenty
millions of dollars, and this ruin is raised by the city
of Marseilles without aid from Government. The
profit to the stockholders, arising from the werk,
will be principally from supplying water for irrisa.

lar We learn by gentlemen who have returne
from the eastern cities, that the speculating and over
feeding fever is running very high. in New York and
Boston, it is but little below that of '36—'7, and from
the immense importations and rapid increase of the
knots and discounts of banking institutions. a revulsion
is confidently anticipated by those who calmly watch
the current of events. • Since the Ist of January, the
importations at New York alone, have-reached to 'near
ly $60,000,000. This has thrown the balance of trade
against us, and the shipment of specie is the conse
quence.
In Boston, the rage for trading, and building, and
improving, is said to be immense. Here, too, the im
portations have been unprecedented. These goods
must find a sale, which in addition to the greatly in
creased domestic production, will fill the country with
more than its necessities require, and more than it is
able to pay for, without disturbing the present pros
perous state of its business relations.
The spirit of overtmding, however, bas not yet pen
etrated into the interior. Although a vast amount of
merchandize found its wny to the west, and was dis
posed of, yet this was owing to the fact that the interi
or had become nearly exhausted, anti therefore requir
ed to be re-supplied. IVe would advise care and
caution, lest the difficulties and embarrassments Item
which we have just escaped, be upon us attain.

my expectatio s. I had not anticipated the degree of
pleasure produced by the medicated vapor during
the whole process of its operation. i could scarcely
have spent fifteen minutes morn pleasantly; while
my binge were inhaling an odoriferous perfumed at

and even exhilerated. I hail been troubled much with
rheumatic pains, and worn down with fatigue cf busi
ness. the pains were completely removed, and I re

broken bones, or reduce luxations of joints; to such
things it makes no pretensions. But it can and does,

its presence, be incompatible with a perfectly healthy

To make yourn look so, with a grin, replied Josh,
1' re bought you a bottle of Thorn'= Tooth Wash,
'Tisthe best now in use, so the gentlefolks say,
And since they have tried this, cast all others away.
But to prove it the best to make the teeth shine.
Look again, my dear Sul, at tke lustre of mine•
Then try this great tooth wash,
The Teaberry tooth wash,
And see ifthis tooth wash of Thorn's is not fine.
Having tried Dr. "Thorn's Tea Berry• Tooth

Pittsburgh, Sept. 15, 1842,.
I take pleasure in stating, having made use
"Thorn's Tea Berry Tooth Wash," that it is one of the
best dentrifices inure. Being in a liquid form it com
bines neatness with convenience. While it cleanses
the enamel end removes the tartar from the teeth, its
perfume yields a fragrance peculiarly desirable.
J. P. TIBBETTS. Is.. D.
The undersigned have used "Tharn's Compound
Tea Berry Tooth Wash," and have found it to be an
extremely pleasant dentrifice, exercising a most NOW
tary influence over the Teeth and Gums; preserving
those indispensable members from premature decay,
preventing the accumulation of Tartar, and purifying
the Breath. Having thoroughly tested its virtues, we
take pleasure in recommending it to the public, believ
ing it to be the best article °fib° kind now in use.
