DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
Yesterday afternoon. tine of the must destructive fires
. with which oar city has for a lime time been visited oc
curred. A stable on the premises occupied by Messrs
Coates &Glenn, as a lumber yard, was set on fire by
some incendiary, *bout four o'clock, and in the course
of three hours the stable, with three horses, and all the
lumber in the yard. was n heap of ruins. The yard was
located at the corner of Pratt and Green streets. The
I.s to Messrs. Coates & Glenn cannot be much- less
than forty thousand dollars—they were partially //HU.
red. Three &settings, two story bricks, the property
of Mr Mordecai Kelly, were burnt, and another much
injured. Mr Kelly occupied one of the houses as a dry
goals store—he saved the cootents ; another was oc
cupied by Mr Cracken—his property was saved ; the
others, an believed, were u noccupied. Mr Kelly was
insured to his peat extent of his WS,. The property
in the vicinity, on Columbia. Green and Pratt streets,
wasin the most imminent danger, end it was only by
the superhuman t fforts of the fireman that the flames
•
were confined to the square in which it originated.—
An arrest or two of negroes was made by the police,
supposed to have been connected with firing the stable.
The firemen deserve great credit for their exertions,
and the wonder is, that with the intense heat and the
scarcity of water, they were able to do as much as they
. did. The helves on the east side of Green street, on
the north side of Pratt, were in the greatest dancer.—
The word work is crisped and blackened—indeed they
„ were °afire several times, but the II imesextitiguishrti.
There was a rumor that a child was burnt in one of the
houses, but we could not learn that it was a feet, and
.are disposed to doubt it.—Batt. Sun, Sept. 11.
