LATER FROM MEXICO
The New Orleans Picayune of the 18th contains Is
let intelligence from Mexico. It says:—
. At about 10 o'clock yesterday forenoon, the Brig
sicsopof-sier Rose, Capt. Sturot, arrived in this port
from Vera Cruz, and anchored off Ihe Point. She sail
ed from Sacrificious on the Bth inst. The officers oF
the loss reports that the health of Vera Cruz had
muciriasprased, the fever having materially abated.
Our advice* by this arrival are not so full as we
could wish, not a letter from our own correspondent
coming to hand. and our files liMag_itoperfect.
• Sa n t a An n e we o r e gratified t4_ learn, has placed
the remains of brave and ill-fated Gen. Sentmanat
'at die disposition of his friends in the United States.-
I%is is bat an act of proper resp-ct to the memory of
the dead and to the feelings of the living. It appears,
alter all the quibbling and denials; 'Allot we first stated
on the subject of - the execution of Sentmanat was true;
his head was severed from his body and boiled in oil.
Santa Alarm utterly disavows the act, and the Govern
ment has in consequence issued an order requiring the
commanding Groom' at Tobasco to report at once what
actually did take place, that he may take measures to
satisfy public opinion and "all that sort of thing."—
This order is dated the 18th of July, at Mexico.
It. appears that both the French and Spanish Minis
--ttlerit at Mexico addressed the liveliest protestations a
gainst the summary execution of the subjects of their
fespectfvti nations at Tobacco. Our files are nut so
complete as to give us the whole correspondence, but
we have a letter from the French minister, dated the
/Bth of July, which thrusts aside with scorn, the sub
tetfrge behind which the Mexican Foreign Secretary
endeavor to defeat the action of his Government in
the premises. He reasons the point on the g eneral
ground of the universal law of nations. He charges
that those Frnich subjects in Sentmanat's expedition,
who were shot without trial. and therefore contrary to
the law of nations. The responsibility he throws upon
the Mexican Government, and awaits in.structions
from home as to the oourse to be pursued upon the
blood-thirsty slaughter of Tobasco.
That the Spanish Minister has been equally spiri
ted in his protest against the same acts, we infer from
s the semiitivenets with which Ampudia alludes to hint
in his dispatch. The papers before us allude to the
sohjee-t only, but the communications between the two
Governments are not given.
The President shows himself resolutely bent on en
forcing the law against the exportation of specie, wheth-
er gold or silver, which shall not have paid the duty
imposed by law, and he calls upon his cuvtum house
officers to exercioe the utmost vigilance in the premi-
- We cannot learn verbally anything by this arrival as
the progress of the Mexican designs upon Texas, and
one papers throw no new light on the subject whatever.
Wemust therefore be content to await another arrival.
