..rf RANGE STORY OFTHE ST ARTS.
The two distinguished relatives--distinguiShed foe
their presumed lineage, and personal trearing—Whe
are the subjects of the following extract, reside yrithin
a few miles of the village of Beauly, an the roniantie
vale of Eskede le, Invenmss shore. Be j.hey legitimate,
or not, Stuarts, they certainly are. An eee fruniller
with the portraits of Charles the Ist or 2d, or Cheriee
Edward. their grandfather, would at once recognise
the family resemblence. One of them is married to
wealthy Irish lady, a Beresford, we believe. The , fer
male members of this interesting family preserve in
their features and persons all the grace and beauty
which so distinguished their kingly line. They ere
'exemplary Catholics.
I(Pro m a recent work by the Viscount D'Arlincoure,
who lately visited this country.)
I quitted Inverness for the mansion of Cul. Hue,
Red Cnstle, which not only po4essed for ma
'the interest of a beautiful situation, but also diet of
histoticul recollections. It was the last. S...:ntch castle
"which übstinetely resisted Cromwell. Charles Ed-.
nerd was there a short time before his defeat; ti:e
chamber occupied by him has been preserved. I beg !
ged permissio n to sleep there, and found myself with;
in the same walls where the lair of the Scottish kings
must once have felt his heart beat with the hope anti
tine memory of the past; for he was there surrouded
by his faithful Ilighlanders.and until then fortuue bad
appeared to snule upon him. Ales! Culloden was
at hand.
On joining the breakfast prty nett morning, es me
thoughts were engrossed by recollections 1745,
spoke of the emotions I had felt in Charles Edward's
chamber.
"You are doubtless come hither," said one of by
rests, "to visit his grandchildren?"
"Hisgrandchildre n !" I repeated, with an min:
ITlttrion of'orprise.
"They live very near heir," he resumed. "Nothing
can be more interesting than their mysterious abodri
it is called Eilan
"But," said I, "the tomb of Cardinal York, in Sc
Pete,'s at Rome, bears the celebrated inseriPtion,
''•Here lies the last of the Suarts."
"They who commanded the inscriptionyou mention ty
be placed there hnd doubtless their ownreason s fur do:
ing, so. But go and seethe clecendants of Charles Ed
ward; they are the two handszmest men in this part of
the country. Nature has loaded them with herfavours.
Education, wit, talents, they are deficient in none Of
them; they would have been worthy to a throne."
My cutiosity was excited. I passed the remain
der of the day iti making inquiries respecting the broth :
era Stuart, for whom a general interest is manifestel
I the not th of Scotland, and the following. details
ere related to met—,
Charles Edward, it was said, h a d a s o n from his
marriage with the Princess of Souberg, Countess i
Albany, This fecit which has not been publiShed

history, is contradicted by official statements, but at
tested by authentic documents; scone of these last 1 .
have seen, but I will not venture to Speak of them.—
As to the following details which have been published
in different compilations, I 'nay repeat them wiihtluf
scruple.
A Scottish doctor, named Cameron, being It nor:
ence, in Italy, a stranger of high rank sent to him; beg :
ging him to visit a noble lady, who was danger
ously ill. A promise of secrecy ns to what he might
see was exacted from hint, and his eyes were blindfold :
ed before he was admitted to the presence of her who
required his care. On at riving at the plve srhfre fta
was expected. Dr Cameron bdield a lady tying pn
bed. She had just given birth to a son. A anrse,,,ss
well as a priest had been summoned final, the - pet:
trait of Charles Edward, set round with preCimis
atones, lay on a table; and at the end of the room was
the Prince himself.
The doctor wrote and signed n detailed staitetnerli
of th e flier. It is affirmed that this declaration is ono
of the documents in th..: possession of the brothers
Stuart. There still exists a picture painted at the
time (I am not authorised to say where itis,) which
represents Charles Edward in the act of intrnsting his
son to Admiral Hoy, to be brought up in secret at a
distance from him. The Admiral is standing on bceird
a ship. his wife is nn snore, with one knee bent to the
cronnd she is tercel% inc the chili from the Prince, and
the vessel awaits therm
But why did Charles Edward and the Countess or
Albany so carefully conceal the exi.strece or their soul
Why did they confide him to an Admiral of the name
of Hay,that lie should he brought up 11%.. ay from themt
The answer is as follows: 'The Prince wished to
place his child in safety until he attained his anijori.:
ty: he was conc.:peed that the life of a new heir of 'the
Staorts would h attempted; moreover. hp desire 4 tlfat
he should be kept in ignorance of his birth, that 'his
education and early years might not be disturbed by
thoughts of a sceptre and the throne; he would- not
have enlightened Lim except favourable circumstancts
had rendered milt a proceeding necessary.
But after the death o
r f her hu:band, why did notthe'
Countess of Albany veal the secret of the existence
Of another Stuart? In r eply to this, it is stated that
the Countess of Albany, the mistress of Alfieri, and
a woman of little principle, li.id .
ii/M39 3 a reward fir continued silence. Theni
is
nothing surprising in ibis conduct of her who. after
having been the wife of Char!'- wstd, became the
mistress of Alfieri, and ended by eontlacting a third
marriage with a paintei of Montpellier, called Fabre
The son of Charles Edward adopted by Admiral
Hay, whose name he bore, married. it is said, conmary
to the will of his maibcr. he became the father of two
sons who are the brothers Stoat,. He caused them to
be brought up in Scotland, and retired himself into
Italy, where be still lives in the strictest seclusion. It
is pretended that, bound by a solemn oath, he has for
bidden ever to reveal their origin, at least during his
life. They therefore will neither publish, nor permit to
be published, any of their titletq nevertheless, they
openly assume their grandfather's name; the eldest
signs himself Jolm Sobieski Stuart, and the second,
Charles Edward Stuart. The former bears a striking
resemblance to Vandyke's portrait of Charles the First,
hut is much handsomer; the other is the living image'
of the Pretender. They have in their possession mosr
valuable and remarkable articles: the order; of Chides
Edward, his clothes, watch, jewels, hair, flage, arms.
and portrait. I was shown the chests where the heir
of the Highlanders usually kept his money : MI pneclous
stones, and his pnpera locked up; this chest or
a present from Francis 1., is admirably caracd.
still contains title deeds.
Let us conclude with some - erstracts from an article
in the nCatliolic Magazine"
"Was Ca Mina, York really the last of the Stuart.}
It is generally maintained that he was; but has the
statement been proven? No.
