AFFECTING INCIDENT.
The following touching incident we clip from the
Row York Mirror: -
An sraieent clergyman one evening became the sub
ject of conversation, and a wonder was expressed that
Isamu never married. " That wonder ," said Miss
Porter, "was once expressed to the reverend gentle
man'himself in my bearing, and he told a story in an
swer which 1 will tell you, and perhaps slight as it
may seem, it is the history of other hearts as sensitive
delicate as his own. Soon after his ordination he
preached once every Sabbath fur a clergyman in a
shall village not twenty miles from London. Among
bit auditors, from Sunday to Sunday, he observed a
young lady, who always occupied a certain seat, and
whose close attention began insensibly to grow to him
an object of thought and pleasure. She left the church
VA soon as the service was over, and it so chanced that
he went on fur a year without knowing her name; but
his sermon was not written without many a thought
how she would approve it, nor preached with satisfac
tion unless be read approbation in her face. Gradual
ly be came to think of her at other times than when
writing sermons, and to wish to see her on other days
than Suoday; but the weeks slipped on, and though
he fancied that she grew paler and thinner, he never
mustered resolution to ask her name or seek to speak
with her. By those silent steps, however, love had
worked into his heart, and he made up his mind to
seek her acquaintance and marry her, if possible,
when one day he was sent for to minister at a funeral.
The face of the corpse was the same that had looked
up to /lint Sunday after Sunday, till he learned to
make it a part of his religion and life. He was un
able to perform that service, and another clergyman
oliliciated; and after she was buried, her father took
him aside and apologized for giving him pain—but be,
could not resist the impulse to tell bim that his daugh
ter had mentioned his name with her last breath, and
be was afraid that a concealed affection for him had
hurried her to the grave. Since that, said the clergy
man In question, my heart has been dead within rue,
and I look forward only. I shall speak to her in
Heaven.
JOHN BULL AND BROTHER JONATHAN.
Some of the London editors complain bitterly, at
the immense quantity of provisions and nick-necks,
which Brother Jonathan is pouring into Great Britain.
The London Morning Post, for example, has an arti
cleupon the subject, which commences as follows:
"It will not escape observation, that the Americans
continue pouring in their farming produce upon us.—
We have, in the list of the Prince Albert's cargo. 1,-
554 packages of lard, 1,508 packages of cheese, and
540 packages of cured beef, all of them commodities
that may be supplied by our own people, in the most
ample abundance and perfection. We have also a
further importation of clocks, chairs, brooms, and bis
cuits, so that, while thousands of poor people are
roaming &beat the country in search of employment,
many of whom havebeen deprivedof it in consequence
of the sinking condition of our native agriculture, the
Americans have the privilege not only of serving us in
the capacity of butchers, bakers, cheesemongers, and
the like, upon a largo scale, but of becoming our clock,
broom, and chair makers. The contents of 1,150
packages of merchandise, of which no particulars are
given, may be believed to comprehend a variety of
things, the importation of which from foreigneountries,
interferes directly with English industry."
