Having just com - plated the somewhat laborious and perplexing task of examining these several sett, for the purpose of ascer with certainty the existing state of the law on the I proceed to state the result, in the hope that it may be useful to others. The following foreign gold coins are now a legal teat* within the United States, bj,vreight at the Col -kiwis% rates: 1. The geld coins of Great Britain, of not less than bquelted and fifteen and a half thousandths in Ibientat, at ninety-four cents and sixteenth* of a cent Per pennyweight. 2. The gold coins of France, of not less than eight hundred end ninety•nine thousandths in fineness, at ninety-two cents and nineteenths of a cent per penny vreight. 3. The good coins of Portugal and Brazil, of not less than two carets fine, at the rate of ninety four cents and ititecrths of a cent per pennyweight. 4. gold coins of Spain, Mexico and Columbia, of the fineness of twenty carets and three grains and - seven sixteenths ofa grain, at the rate of eighty nine cents and nine-sixteenths of a cent per pennyweight. Spanish pillar dollars and the dollars of Mexico, Pere and Bolivia. of not less than eight hundred and ninety-seven thousandths in fineness, and four hundred and fifteen grains in weight, at one hundred cents each. Dollars of Chili and Central America, of not less weight than four hundred and fifteen grains in via, noddiese re-stamped in Brest of the like weight, or no less fineness than ten ounces. fifteen pennyweights of fine silver in the Troy pound of twelve ounces of standard silver. 4. The five franc pieces - of France, of not less fine ness than ten ounces Troy weight of standard silver, and weighing no less than three hundred and eighty fear grains each, at the mind ninety-three cents each. The Secretary of the Treasury is required by law to caeseassays to be had at the Mint, at least once in eevry year, of all the gold coins and of the silver coins, iezoept Spanish milled dollars, and to report the re sult to Congress.
