A COIII.IIICT StNTlllllM—Amos Kendra/ says,
"we never brought an action for libel or slander in our
life. Antics, of that sort, when connected with polit
ical life, are like following a hornet which hes stun g

SUPPOSED MURDER OF A CHILD BY HER
GUARDIAN
The Eath Courier gives the particulars of the proba
ble murder of an orphan girl six or seven years of age
in Hornsby, Steuben Co. by a hag named Henry. It
weemrthat the child came to itadeath the 11th day of
hst January. Nothing was known - of the sickness of
the girl - by the neighbors until the day of her death, when
hoe uncle tesitiing a few miles distant was sent for, and
-arrived about an hour before her death. When she
had ceasedurbreathe, he requested that the neighl3or
lug womenmight be called in to lay her out. This was
done, but beforeany of them had arrived, this office had
been hurriedly performed by Mrs Henry and her daugh
ter. It was noticed that one of the bands was ban
daged-, end the woman refused to have it removed.—
Subsequently some words were dropped which led to
suspicions,-and the woman was arrested and the body
of the child disinterred, and acoroner's jury brought
in a verdict that she came to her death by violence and
ill treatment. On removing the bandages from the
hand*, all the fingers and one of the thumbs were rea
dy to drop off—one of the middle fingers was missing.
This the aroused acknowledged dropped off before the
child died. Eseh finger and thumb were done up
separately with a bandage and splint. This condition
of the bands is said to have been caused by freezing.
it being in proof that the child had been tied np and
lei in an open Shopzr room in extreme cold weather.
Various bruises were found onithe body, and from the
eppenranee of the stomach and bowels, no nourishment
had been received by the child for several days pre
vious to its death.
THE IRON AND COAL TARDE OF VIRGINIA.
The importance of this trade may be inferred from
the following stetement, taken from a report of the
Committee of Manufactures of the last Congress.
Number of blast furnaces, 53.
Amount of production of pig iron, 26,500 tons.
Value thereof in market, $795,000.
Number of persons employed in matting pig iron,
2,500. •
Number of bloomeries, forges and rolling mills, 36.
Annual amount of bar iron produced, 1'..),600 tons.
Value at market; $1,134,000.
Nombre of persons employed ,_2,520.
Aggregate value of agricultural and other domestic
productions consumed, $450,000.
We learn from the same report that the amount of
'coal produced in Virginia from 1822 to 1841, inclu
sive, was upwards of forty-nine millions of bushels,
exceeding, by more than five milli ins, the whole a
mount offormgn coal imported into the United States
during the same period.
The amount of American productions consumed in
the business of coal mining in the counties of Chester
field, Henrico, and Guochland, is about $120,000, and
the amount paid forlabor is $BO,OOO, for every $2,000,
000 of bushels produced.
The beds of iron ore and coal in Virginia are numer
ous and inexhaustible, and only need the fostering care
of the Government for a short time, to render them a
source of incalculable wealth to that State and the na
tion.

CURE OF A. CANCEROUS SORE.
Soto Suf., January 21,1843.
Dr. Benjamin Brandreih:-.-Bonoted Sir, owing
to you a debt of gratitude that money cannot ray,l am
induced to make a public acknowledgment of the ben
efit my wife has, derived from your invaluable pills.—
About three years this winter she was-taken with a
pain in her ankle, which soon became very much in
flamed and swollen: so much so that we became alarm
ed, and sent for the -doctor. During his attendance
the pain and swelling increased to an alarming degree,
and in three weeks from its first ceinix' bencement it be
came a ruining sore. She could got no rest at night
the pain was se great. • Our first doctor attended bee
for six months; and she received no benefit whatever,
the pain growing worse and the , sore larger all the
while. He said if it was healed up it would be her
death, but he appeared to be at alms how to proceed,
and poor wife stilizotitioned to suffer themest terrible
tortures. We therefore sought other aid in a Botani
cal doctor, who said when he first saw it that he could
soon cure the sore, and give her motet once. To eor
surprise be gave her no relief, and acknowledged that
it baffled all his skill.
Thus we tell after having tried during one whole
year the experience of two celebrated plepicians in
vain, in absolute despair. My poorwife's constitution
rapidly failing in the prime of her years from her oon
tinned suffering. Under these circumstances we conp
clad id that we would try your Universal Vegetable
Pills, determined to fairly test their curative effects.—
To my wife's great comfort the first few doses afford
ed great relief to the pain. Within one week, to the
astonishment of ourselves and every one whoknew the
case, the swelling and the inflammation begat4to muse
so that she felt quite easy, and would deep comforta
bly, and sir, after six weeks use she was able to go
through the house, and again attend to the manage
ment of her family, which she bad not done for 14.
months. In alittle over two months from the time she
first commenced the use of your invaluable pills, her
ankle was quite sound. and her health better than it
had been in quite a number of years before. 1 send
you this statement after two years test of the cure, con
sidering it only an act of justice to you and the public
at large.
We are, with much gratitude,
Very respectfully.
TIMOTHY AND ELIZA LITTLE.
P. S. The Botanical Doctor pronounced the sore
cancerous, and finally said no good could be done, un
less the whole of the flesh was cut off, and the bone
scraped. Thank a kind Providence this made us re
sort to your pills, which saved us from all fun her mis
ery, and for which we hope to be thankful.

I take pleasure in stating, having made use of
"Thorn's Tea Berry Tooth Wash," that it is one of the
best dentrifices in use. Being in a liquid form it com
bines neatness with convenience. While it cleanses
the enamel and removes the tartar from the teeth, its
perfume yields a fragrance peculiarly desirable.

The undersigned have used "Tirana's Compound
