    PITTSBURGH; PA.
FRIDAY MORNING, MARCH 29, 19-41
LOSS OF THE .STEAMER WESTON.v.-FIVE
PERSONS DROWNED!
The Aliquippa arrived here yesterrffty afternoon,
informs= that iu descending the Mississippi Itiver, and
when about one hundred miles below St Louis, at a
place known as the "Devil's Back Bone," she came in
contact with she new Steamer Weston; bound for St.
Louis, and sunk her. The facts appear to be as ful
l( we: When first observed, the AVeston was keeping
chase to the shore, and the Aliquippa was well out in
the stresm. Presently the Weston headed out as
though with thsimention of crusii:tig the river, bin sud
denly straightened up, Jolt the Aliquippa was her-'
self crossing to the shunt. Every attempt to avoid cols
hsion seems tohave ralie it more inevitable; but they
were about in this positban when they came tiogether;
the Aliquippa striking the Weston on her starboard
bow; and so forcible was the collision that the bow of
the Weston rested ocktliat of the Aliquippa, enticing her
guards beneath the water. The passengers or thelet
te.r briar. thinking 'hit she was sinking, irnfillind Capt.
Smith to shove the Westin off; instead of which he or
dered his engineer to start the Engine, and, at the risk
of losing his own boat, he succeeded in taking the Wes
. ton within one hundred yards of the shore, where she
sunk in 50 feet water. She was crowded with passen
gers; there children were drowned, ones two of thoci ew
sire also supposed to have been lost. Several families
from Pittsburgh were on board, and we are happy to
state that tbey are all safe. The Aliquippa remained
by the wreck fur fourtren limits, rendering every assis
tance to the passengers, who were, at length. taken to
St Louis on the Steamer Maria. They lust all their
baggage, and the boat and cargo are a total loss.
We have heard that the bi bat nd a portion of the car
go are insured in this civ--ehe Fireman's, we believe,
is the heaviest sufferer. Mr Kingaland, who eras nio_
wing to St Louis, had $6OO insured on his furniture.
The Weston and the Aliquippa were both new boats,
and were each making their first trip. The occident
doubtless occurred from an over-a i.xiety toavo.dcollis
ion.
P. S. We forgot to state above that the accident
occurred un Thursday night, the 21st inst,, between 9
and 10 o'clock.
ANOTHIER Wedaeliday fvfraooa, a fire
broke out in the .table of Mr lVm Coleman, in Alle
gheny, back of Lleock street, which destroyed the sta
ble, and placed in imminent danger the surrounding
property. Through the exertions of the firemen, and
by tearhez down n tot fiber of coal sheds, &c. the flames
were prevented from spreading.

Our rivers since our last have fallen a little, yet all
continue in good order and agowi deal doing on them
all. The weather has become warm and a good deal
of business is doing in all parts of our city, and our
streets exhibit in every quarter great improvement in
trade; indeed several of our lame and extensive mer
chants and manufacturers seem to be selling and pack•
inta good many goods, and the carrying trade is also
very active. Upon the whole we believe the business
of the apprasching months of April and May will be
verymuch increased and encouraging to all branches
of trade.

RESPECTFULLY inform theirfriends and shippers

Transportation Line, flora the United States Portable
Boat Line. to the American Portable Boat Line.
This line is composed of twenty-five new Four Sec
tion Portable Boats, one of which will depart daily,
from Pittsbu tgjr , Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The suority and advantages of the Portable
Boat over every other mode of transportation are too
well known to shippers generally to require comment;
suffice it to say, that the detention, loss, sepiration and
damage to Goods, invariably attending three tran
shipments between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, are
by the Portable Boats most eirectually removed.
To gave undoubted security to owners and shippers,
all goods and produce shipped by this line will be in
sured in a responsible office in Philadelphia, without
any additional charge to the owners.
Merchandise shipped by this line in any of the east
ern cities, and consigned to H Devine &Co, will be for-
warded immediately on arrival at Pittsburgh to any
part of the west, free of commissions.
H. Devine will receive produce consigned to him,
pay steamboat freight and charge.s, and forward the
same to any of the eastern cities, and charge no com
missions for storage, advancing or forwarding. Any
communications or goods directed to the care of the
undersigned Agents will be promptly attended to.
