The project of connecting the Red Sea with
the Mediterranean, by a ship canal across the Isthmus
of Suet, is attracting some attention in England. The
importance of such a work to British interests, and to
the commerce of Europe and AmeriCa is immenee. —
Mehemet Ali proposed at one time to construct a rail
road across the Isthmus, and, indeed, it is rid that he
is now actually trogagedin it. A canal would, howev
er, be far =ore beneficial to the interests of trade
and commerce, and there is a feeling rowing up , in
favor of suchst work, which we may hme will bring
about, its accomplishment at some no very distant peri
od. The construction of such a canal will be no new
thing. The ancients opened e-e from the eastern arm
of the Nile to the Mediterranean, which was long the
channel of commerce between the two seas. It was
re-opened by the Caliph Omar about sit hundred years
after Christ, and remained in use for a century and a
ball when it was suffered to fall . into dzetty. The
practicability of the work i4thus settled by esperience 4 l
the utility of it is pasta doubt. and we are fain to be
lieve at it will be commenced and prosecuted to com
