A TRUE STORY OF SCOTLAND
r KISS MILTON.
In all the realm of Seethed, these was none so fair
las Jean Hamilton, the daughter of the Earl 'or Hid
dington, and she was beloved by thefairest smdbravevt
knight that ever rode at tilt or tourney. But how
seldom sloth true love run smooth; and how many
hearts bleed and break .beneath the torment, ef 'out
raged and wronged erections I And so it Ina with
Jean and her lover; for w rong came between thein—
wrong that led to crime and death.
'Now, my daughter--my daughter Jean, ' said-tiro
stout Earl of Haddingten, 'think no more of bis young
knight, Sir John Fas, of Dunbar, for I have chow fee
thee a fitter mate—one sneerer for an Earl's. sialighPer

'Rut ob,my father P said the Lady Jam, 'I cane,•
break my truth to Johnie--I cannot forget my)ove--
I cannot wed this Earl of Cassilis. I will wed my
own knight—Johnie Fan; and my gold . and my lands
will be sufficient for both.'
1 Sore was thecontest between love and dirty fa the

were her prayers that she might be spared this's creel
fate; but twas all in vain. The father and the, datigh
ter parted in anger and in teary; but the tears were
poured unheeded, and they robbed her heart otitis lore.
There was inver a. wedding so gay in appearance as
that ofJean Hamilton and the Earl of Castilla. Alf
that wealth could buy was there--all the beauty of gaill.
burgh was gathered to the marriage; but there was
none to equal that of Jeant.though pale em the white

The Earl of Cassilis was the sixth of his title, and
come of a good stock. He was a stern covenanter,
severe in aspect, plain and short in speech; there was
nought to win a lady's love in him. But belted broad
lands, as well as noble name, and puredescent; and es
he was himself a new made lard, be thought to
raise his Emily by this greatconnetion. Cassilis had
lauds, and name, and pure descent, and noble, blood--
but he wanted gold; and Hamilton gave his daughter a
rich dower, so that all parties were satisfied, sinve - the
poor weeping bride and die gallant knight... Sir Johnie
Faa, of Dunbar,
who though thus deserted, forgot not
his lady-love, aad thought but to regainher.
Poor Jean went to herhusband's home, where they
lived for three long year. in peace and quietness; for
though there could be nolove en her side, yet she be
came, in course of time, attached to him and his good
qualities—his honest heart—his strong mind—his rec
titude of principle—his love of truth and right---his
high honor—his unblemished faith--such qualities ex
cited her admiration, shed commanded hertrue feeling* _
with all her strength, yet they rase ever in her heart,
pleading with ceaseless yearning for her first love.—
Three years passed, and three fair children, during
that period, bloomed around the hearth of Lord asd
Lady Cassilis--three little lovely daughters, like rose
buds in their beauty and similarity of appearance—
each the image of its lovely mother.
Jean Hamilton began to feel what happines was;
her affection turned itself to these fair creatures, and
on these she placed her hope; sighing only sometimes,
'as She gazed on their young fates, and thought, white
she twined her fingers amid their golden tresses, and
looked into their blue eyes, of him who, in all her early
dreams of bliss, had been the chosen husband alter
heart—the sharer of her future life and love.

and to sing to her soft lute those witching strains which
all so loved to hear—they were so wild, so sweet, so
sad? The earl is gone to the hunting, - with a gallant
train of knights, and squires, and grooms, and hinds,
and huntsmen; with Wends, and horses, and well
trained falcon; with arrows, knife, arid spear. They
