FRIDAY Zi ORNIMG, JANUARY 12, 1844
• STILIMIIOkT lICILDUCG.--IVe shall not be drawn in
a controversy Is ith the little Captain who pre-
Oita* to tarnish River intelligence for the "Age."—
Htving mamma our mechanics from the injury which
Lila ignorance a+.,l presumption had dune them, we
Would have let the matter drop, had be not attempted
to holler up his statement by a deliberate falsehood.
He asserts, in reply, that his feet "statement Was Cor.
sect in all respects " Now, wean prove that itis i.
esorrJet both in rerard' to tonnage and cost. For in
fiance, in order to make hie falsehood about the cost
-somewhat plauri'do, he out down the New Montezuma
at 375 ton., whereas, her Captain (who. we presume
knows something about it) has frequently said she
vvould carry hut 200. Now, if he bad stated that a
boat carrying 200 tons coat in this city $lB,OOO, every
body would have known it was a falsehood; so he very
prudently adds 175 tons—thus piling falsehood upon
falsehood. He pursues the same course with regard
to the El 'Dorado, and a dozen of other boats on his
list. Our builders have charged $l5 a ton for most of
*boats built here the past year. and will any man at
'all acquainted with the matter pretend to say that a
'boat like the “Belesst," measuring 96 tons, cannot be
finished for less than $9000; yet such is his statement;
'to support which he puts her down as a 200 ton beet.
Hs assumes to be acquainted not only with the cost of
boats in this city, but also in Cincinnati; as an evidence
"of which ho states the cost of the "John !hull," at
420,000, when Capt. Roe, her owner says, that she
'stoat just $16,000. But what does Copt. Roe know
when compared with the "River Reporter of the Age:" .
We would like him to name the two boiler boat that,
•with old engine and boilers cost in Cincinnati $21,000.
The fact is, it is all guess work with the "Captain."
'Many, of the boats he narpes are not finished, and be can
not, of course, know their tonnage. Others that are
ennningio grossly exaggerated, as he may see from
elle Custom House papers. if be will resort to them.

A fatal epidemic, it is sub!: prevails in the West In

and more severe in every way than it had been re

at the latest dates, continued to rage with unabated

to this insatiable malady. The epidemic, so far as the

DEPARTED.
Little Ben, Tnacker, Cincinnati
To tho Patrons of the Brighton Paper Milk
Gentlemen: his my misfortune to inform you that
alarm noon yesterday my manufactory was discovered
to be on first, •aai raged su rapidly that the building
containing my making machinery was entirely consu
med. The damage to the machinery is extensive, but
how much so it is impossible at this time to state.
The machinery was but lately constructed, and cer
tainly was nut sail) t.sed in the Union. The damage
w the m tin building is not so extensive, the grent•r
. , damage sustained bring on the stock, which was fully
equal to six months consumption: the loss arising from
tile removal of the finished paper is but to a small ex
-tent, but the unfinished (of which Lot tunately there was
but a small proportion) will be principally lust.
For theinformation of my newspa:,er customers I
would inform them that I have enongh paper on hands
to supply them fur the next three months, during which
time, if ever, I hope to have the est tblishment again
In operation, but to enable me to do so, I am obliged
to call upon all those indebted to me, to pay the same
with as little delay as possible.
The establishment is one of tho very few, East Or
West, that ha. successfully withstood the storm. thlt
has far some yeses raged with such fury against the
manufacturing interests of the country, and I do hope
that the desire once more to put into operation a long
standing and favorite business will excuse, if necessa
ry, the peremptory demand made unavoidable by cir
cumstances, on my patrons.
Very respectfully, &c.

FOR SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boats prorided with
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
IT would be well for the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all men who understand the
• principles of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to Make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have wont to an additional expense
thatyour lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do net charge more than. other boats;
their accommoeiatioas in other respects are equai, and:
in many cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid thr,se dis
asters.
All boats marked thus [']in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.
