wti...* DAILY POST. WEDIU : SDAY 'MORNING, DECEMBER 27 P T•BUHQH BOARD OF TRADE C0N2111122 TO DECLICBER. William Eichbaum—F. Lorenz—Robert Bell %IBM htxrtrries.—The meetings on Saturday evening were not as well attended as they should Lave boon. These primary gatherings have an impor tant infbienota on the interests of tha cirizens, and eve ry man who d-sires our municipal affairs to be pro perly managed, should attend, so that he may either &this approval to prudent measures or oppose oth ers that would tend tour) injury of the city. The in difference in regard to the meetings on Saturday even ing, we believe to have proceeded from an impression ther4elegazes would be appointed to meet in Conven tion for the purpose of nominating a party candidate for Mayor. On this question, n m ijority of the demo eratithave their minds made up, and as they will not support a political candidate for the office, they would 'not commit themselves to the m?asitre by taking any part in the primary proceedings. . . The democrats of the fifth ward, took the right view of the Mayoralty question. After selecting, candidates 'for all the ward offices, they resolved not to appoint any delegates to the Mayor's Convention, but to leave the choice of Mayor to the free action of the people, withoutany dictation from ward meetings or canyon , time. They are convinced of the impropriety of ma king that °Mae a matter for party strife, and experi ence has shcnviehern the impossibility of electing par ty candidateswho will discharge its duties impartially. ACtTizEtt CM4DIDATZ is the policy of the democrat icparty, and tt is the policy titat has always been sup- ported by the people. We have never known the citi :ens to support cheerfully a political candidate bro't out by any party, and from the result of the late ward imeetinge, we think it is more apparent than ever that they will not consent to confide the management of our city affairs to warm political pitrtizans. COUNTY TREASURER.—We are informed, that yes terday, ROBERT GLASS. Esq•, County Treasurer elect, produced the full amount of hail required, and it was duly approved by the Cornmibsieners. NVe are sin cerely gratified at thin, ca will be all who supported Mr. Glass at the late election. THIRD %VALID SCHOOLS To the Editor of the Aforreing Peet: DEAD. Ste: On Tuesday, of last week, I attended the examination of the male department. Mr Isaac Whittier, principal, in which are taught orthography,' reading, writing. geography, English grammar, arith metic, algebra. modern history. natural philosophy, book-keeping, and declamation: also, vocal music, by Mr Smith. The pupils acquitted thern+elves in a man ner highly creditable, showing clearly that they were under the care of able and finidliA madterd. Their thorough knowledge of the first principles and ele ments of each branch in which they were examined, showed that the superstructure or their education was based upon a solid foundation. o.i the day following, I attended the examination of the female department, Mrs A M Whittier, principal: in which are taught all the branches above. mentioned, except algebra, book keeping. and rd:clamation, and also, drawing and nee dle work. Thu performances of the p.ip:l, of this do partment were set complete and satisfactory, that even the uncharitable critic could find no spot or blemish,on Which to rest his jaundiced eye. Upon the Black Board. the extraction of the cube root was us readily and rapidly performed as the simple addition of num bera. The arrangements classification, and discipline of these school.; are of the first order, and du great cm -slit to the skill, judgment, arid perseverance of the Teachers, who are a credit to the Directors who select ed them, and to the cause of Common School Educa tion. I am informed by one of the Directors, that the ex amination of tip-Infant Schools, on Monday, Mrs H J Smith, principal, was equally satisfactory. If any doubt the utility of the Common School System, I ad vise them to visit these schools, that they may doubt no longer. Better scholars cannot be produced in any select schoal, than are in these. FOR SAFETY, Travellers should select Boats provided with Evan': Safety Guards for preventing Ea-plosion of Steam Bo tient IT would be well for the traveling community to bear in mind that their security depends entirely upon their own encouragement of boats that have or may be at the expense of procuring the above appara tus. And that every individual making such selec tions is contributing towards a general introduction of an invention admitted by all men who understand the principles of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already taken place, their almost daily occurrence,_ and the thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a Safety guard Boat, and in every cam to give it the preference. They have went to an additional expense that your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore to meet them with a corresponding de7.ree of liberality, and by your preference show that you appreciate their laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu man life. They do not charge more than other boats; their accommodations in other respects are equal, and in many cases superior; and as there is one leaving Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when it is so completely in your own power to avoid those dis asters.
