geITINCI LLST NIGHT.—Thu meeting which 'wee
heldlsot evening at the old Court House, fur the pur
pose of nominating a citizens' candidate for Mayor,
adjourned without doing any business. The wise fel
lows .whocalled it were eitl.er among the missing, or
wets •frail to raise their voices amid the din and hub
bub that prevailed. Many efforts were made to or
ganize the meeting, and almost every resident of the
city, f..-om the substantial citizen down to the most mi.
lorions Wafer, was called upon to take the chair. Ev
ery one, •however, seemed ashamed of the business,
and the disorderly git'aering was at last adjourned by
the extinguishment of the gas-lights.
BILILICS COUNT T BAN K.—We would caution the poi._
against making too freo with the State Scrip issued
bier Berks county Bank. It will be seen by a notice
from the St.tte Treasurer published in our paper this
inorriing,, that it is no longer received for state dues,
+writhe probability is that what remains in circulation
`will be entirely worthless.
CLIP LSD li.►sONßY.—We will publish on Monday
the letter addressed by Mr Cc•Y to the Antimasons
of Indiana in 1831, and his more recent epistleto the
Antimasons of Lancaster county, dated Nov. 25, 1843.
We find them in the Olobe, accompanied by some ex..

ourneiglibot of die Gazette.
Fir We have received a copy of the Lecture [kik..

have a more intimate knowledge than Mr Craig, and
rem a hasty glance over the pamphlet, we think he
has atratiged his information in such a form as to
make it , of much interes to every reader. We will give
some extracts from it hereafter.

FOR SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boats provided with
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
IT would be well for the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all men who understand the
principles of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
that your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a correspondingdegree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of ha-
Man life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior, and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid those dis
asters.
All boats marked thus Ce 3 in the Listef Arrivahrand
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.
