Dr O'Coxsua.—We take great pleasure in announ
blot that the Bishop of Pittsburgh arrived in New
Yosit (Wpm LiTelpool, in the packet Queen oftho West,
en Saturday last the 9th inst. He may therefore be
espeeted in this city in a few days, where he will be
welcomed by, thousands who appreciate the talent,
malandpiety which ho possesses in so eminent a de-
les:7—The Allegheny River was completely closed
by ice yesterday morniurhbove the new. Bridge.-
- About noon, however, it Intike Up; and carried away
many of the props of the Aqueduct,which event caused
much speculation and excitement among our ftiends
in Allegheny city. It will not, however, materially!
injure that structure. So the day of their rejoicing
is not yet.
Ice is running in the Manongabela, and we have suf
ficient evidence of the approach ofwinter.

practical mode of civilizing our Indians, in which he
recommended marriages with the whites. We find in
the Utica Papers, a Mr. Maris B. Pierce, married to
Miss Mary Jane Carroll, the daughter of a derea.sed
British Oliver. Mr. Pierce is a half blooded Seneca
Chief, who.eo patronymic is lla-dya-nu-rio, or the run-

learn from the Albany Argun that there is every proba
bility of Iron C.rnal Boats being extensively introduc
ed on the Erie Canal next Summer. Tivy draw much
less water, and can carry greater cargoe than wooden
boats. The result of this improvement will be to in
crease the capacity of the Canal, and augment the bu
siness transacted upon it. From the rapid growth of
- the West, and tho number cf emigrants who have gone
there during the past season, the business of 1344 is
etpected to be immense.
DRNADFUL SH/PWRZCZ AND Loss OP LIFE.-A
dreadful storm occurred on the night of the 26th Au
gust, in and oT the coast of Algoa Bay, Cape of Good
Hope, by which four valuable ships, valued at between
430,000 and £40,000, were lost, meals° several lives.
:The first vessel was the Elizabeth Rowell, the next the
Sea Gull, foundered, and all on board, 45 in number
perished. By this catastrophe, we are informed, ten
- widows and twenry.five children are left destitute.—
Another vessel, the Laura, was also los:, with all

I T would be well for the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense ofprocuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual makin.r, such selec
tions is contributim, ' towards a general introduction of
an iavention admitted by all men who understand the
principle s oldie Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
thatyour lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet then, with a corresponding degree oflibemlity,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man lifh. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations iu other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburghevc r y day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid these dis
asters.
