DAILY POST. . WEDNESDAY MORNING. DECEMBER 13 PITTSBURGH BOARD OF TRADE. 0031161TTIE 7011 Dieuiitaxa. Eichbaum—F. Lurena—Robert Bel; MR Paittirs: .1 see its your paper, a few mornings since, in en rtr cis OR ems Mayoralty, you give your decided prefer ' once for a "Citizons' Candidate" for that important of and your reasons are, that they have always made the moat impartialand able city mo;istrates. I ask, who dore mean? Have .you re mean? to the able, tiosporMil and dignified administration of the pre . etrasldayorl An answer to the above is requested by a - PROTESTANT DEMOCRAT. We have no hesitation in satisfying the doubts of a 6 'Protestant Democrat." In our article on the Mayor alty,we referred to the administration of Dr J R M' CusTOClit. Mr M'Ciintock was elected as a "Citi zens' Candidate," and mon of all parties can bear witness to the impartial manser in which he discharg ed thecluties!cf the office, and the pro:Tel-nos condition of the affairs of thissity while they were under his con trol. The present mayor, Vlll3ll first elected, was a party candidate, and his political friends expected that ho would be a party Mayor. We believe he has not ex actly answared their proscriptive views, but whether he is fully convinced of the evil consequences of having the ofce•filled by a violent pasty man who is mere anxious to please political partizans than the citizens at . large, we have nut been informed. We would not care much to what party the candidate belonged. so thst he was liberal, honest and capably, and would not let party canaiderations control him in the discharge of the duties of hisoffice. If the present Mayor possess ea these qualities, "Protestant Democrat" may apply our remarks to hint, if he chooses. It is said that Ole Bull arrived at New York on Evacuation day; and although he by no means con4id. ered the parade to be in honor of his arrival, yet it is said a ounver4ation took place at the Astor House something like the following:. OL But.t.-*Vat is de cause of dis display? • 'Ti4 not dat I arrive to-dav? I tink 'tis something for de Nation? ST 'SON- I Tis what we call Evacuation! When after seven long years' delay, We dreve old Johnny Bull away• OLE BELL—I tick 'tis little dat you 'sir?, OLD Bull went our, OLE Bull came in' SOUTH CARCILINA.—Governor Hammond, in his annual message to the Legislature, sets down the ac tual debt of the State at $3,495,164,34, to be re deemed from 1845 to 1862. Besides this, the State owes two millions for a guaranty to the Cincinnati and Charleston Railroad Company. The governor, ad dressing the Legislature, says, an expression of your opinion en the annexation of Texas to the Union might not be improper. DESCRIPTION OF THE. NEW MF.XICAN COUNTF.R FEIT Colx.—The Mexican papers notice the emission of counterfeitdallms, and state that the government is institutinz a rigid inquiry into the matter. In the spu tious coin the word licpublican is badly executed, the «pace between the two first qylables being very great, arid tho leaves of rtopal which appear to spread from the earth on the reverse of the coin, are larger in the counterfeit than in . the genuine specimens. And that every individual making such selec tions is contributing towards a general introduction of lan invention admitted by all men who understand the r principles of the Steam En; - ine, to be a sure preventa tive against those dreadful disasters. Yuu have cer tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that hate already taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the , thousands of lives that haye already been lost, a suffi cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry fel. a Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the preference. They have went to an additional expense thatyour lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality, and by your preference show that you appreciate their laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu man life. They do not charge more than other boat:; their accommodations in other respects are equal, and in marry cases superior, and as there is one leaving Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when it is so completely in your own power to avoid throe dis asters. All boats marked thus [*] in the List of Arrivals and Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied with the Safety Guard. List of Boats prarided with the Safety Guard. It is a well known Net that cordwood of this kind is always bought in pre ference to any other by steam boats. There is no point on the Ohio river where good wood will bring a better price. In addition to this, there is no part of the west ern rivers navigated by so many steamers—and hence the great demand for good cordwood. It is obvious that this land is more valuable on account of the tim ber, as the clearing of less than onehalf will more than pa" the original cost of the land. The poplar logs can be very advantageously rafted to Louisville, where they have always brought a good price, and are much used fur building purposes. The soil is remarkably rich—and when cleared of its valuable timber, will suit in every respect for all kinds of farming purposes.
