THE. COTTON CULTURE, &c
A: co rrespondent of the National Intelligencer, in the
COMIIO of an able article, gives tho following as a mem
°earldom obtained from the private papers of our ven-

• He adds:—“Whereas, during only one week in the
anotith of March, 1843, there arrived in that port not
less than 177,51.5 bales. brought from the U. States by
such a 'flint of ships as had never before been seen to
enter that harbor. This immense yield was produced
by the South; but it was not a tithe of the last crop
groan there. The entire crop of 1842 did nut fall far
short of two and a half millions of bales, being 2,380,-
03j. This, at the moderate esti:nate of six cents the
pots ad, or twenty-four dollars the bale, gives fifty-seven
miflioss, or mire than one-third the entire floating
capital of the country in this one item alone."
The soma writer. in another part of his paper, says:
—"When the first handful of American cotton arrived
is England, half a century ago, could it have entered in
to the mind of Adam Smith, or of' the most gifted seer
that has ever indulged his fancy in visions of political
economy, to conceive that the fleecy cargo which wan
tlionawn coming over the sea, was destined to spread
iiiself.„in a little while, like Ahab's cloud, over the realms
taco:amerce, and to make the broad ocean white with
skips an.l with-trade 1 So requisite and indispensable
bast this article now become in our domestic economy,
that we of the present day cannot well conceive where

ton as raiment. To others, but not to us. belongs the

by which its future increase is to be regulated, and the
ultimate bounds set to its uses. But as for the resour

much amused by the Mayor's efforts to keep up with

he weary in the presence of her Majesty." The royal
starriness having passed in, the Mayor was alternately
cheered and laughed at by the bystanders.

principles of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against thase dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lest, a suffi
tient warning, and inducement to make inquity for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
That your lives may be secure. Ought yon not therefore
to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality,
And by your przferente show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior; and as them is one leaving
Pittsburgh every clay, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your °empower to avoid th , -4e dis
asters.
