FOR THE POST.
Men. Editors:—Whe n we are considering who shall
be our next Governor, there are two very importatil
mmtees to be taken into view—the virtue and talents
of tbieandidate, , , and their availability or popularity.
As to the first requisite, none stands more highly titan
FILINCIS It Suva It. Ho has been in situations that
hacould have used to gratify his avarice. if he had any.
His poverty proves his vii tue. Ile has never lived
in splendor, o uhigh wages drawn from the taxes cf the
people. oitnotation has had no attraction for him.—
lie has never set himself above the poorest of his fellow
citizens. Pride never hid him to i:Tend the h u mblest
individual. If any were peculiarly the objects of his
kindness, it was those who iind no means of returning
the faVer—no power to wield, for his benefit—no pa
tronage to bestow—nor political influence to exert ie
his behalf. There can be none more loved by all who
know him, for his kind and amiable mariners, or more
esteemed far uprightness of conduct and pm ity of mo
tive.
Hiatalents art• equal to these of air: eu.npeti
tors, if not in thus•' matter s « pica roil:e the ,no-t
noise and gtteate4t show, I , • Ist in all that is rially
useful to others, and adv, antazoous to the state. II is
e.empijteery for the office of Gavernor is far superior
to that of any of hii c.ezip:litor=. While others have
been . seeking nail eajliyin4 pr Citable offices at hum:•
twd :thread, that had little to di with the real business
of the state, he has sp,mt almost a lifetime, nt the low
est salaries. in the servic e of the people of the state,
io those inatiOrli which peculiarly fit him fur the office of
Governor. lie has far many years past, familiar
with the business of the e c -,isiattice and of the execu
tive. having been for man.: years in both departments;
std, having Ixran a consilerable time clerk of the Canal
Commissioners, and always particularly watchful of
their proceedings, there is perhaps no nein in the state
better acqtraiated with the arrairs of our laternal Im
provements, in all their complic iced details.
As to his popularity, I believe that if the people could
moat in convention, untrammeled by petty politicians
and political wire -workers, the claims of all others
would' tie drowned in the grand enthusiastic acclama- I
der/ that would be heard in his favor. His virtues are
just ofthe kind to secure such a devoted and ardent
attachment. The peidle love the man who keeps not
his kindness and respect for the rich and powerful;
but who is equally amiable and r.bliging even to his
hombhist fellow.citizen. And I love human nature
when tied the mass of men howieg before such un
presuming virtue. Th - •re is no pretence in such dem
ocracy. There is no hypocrisy under such quiet, un
ostentalious principles: With such a name presented
by the - cotemiition as a candidate fur Governor, there
could be no division am-mg democrats.
But these virtues It Ise secured for him the favor of
many of the more honest and reflecting men of the oth
er
party. They witnessed his bold, decided, manly
'plod in favor of liberty turd the constitution, when, in
1833, it was ass-tiled in the mast vital part. Many of
them believed that it was right and knew that it was
honest, and there are thousands of diem, who will prove
their honor for him.
They consilered it, and den:lariats will always so
consider it, a kind of heroism. shut be should thus
place lumsclf in the front rank in that fearful contest
—.now generally knowa as the "back-slutt war." Ile
braved the strength of the executive—the power of a
real senate and a pratended house of representatives.
and in'the face of muskets, guns and cannon, and all
dr) pannply of political and military power, dared to
assert the constitutional rights of the peoplo. For this
he is respected, honored and beloved; and 1 venture to
assert, drat, ifhe be nominated, he will receive a higher
vote than ever was given to any man in Pennsylvania.
The imearle will proclaim in loudest, clearest tones—
"HitAltat truly honors u?, we will honor." 11. L.

FOR SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boats provided with
; Ecan's Safety Guards for prsventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
IT would be well for the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above apparn
' too. And .that every individual making such selec
, thins is contributing, towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all in .11 who understand the
principles oldie Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa-
liveagainst those dreadfid disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
that your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a correspondingdcgree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid these dis
asters.
All boats marked thus ["] in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.
