THE NORTII-E,I.STERN BOUNDARY
- _
The survey and denrtrcation of the boundary be
tween the, United Stat , A and the British provinces of
New Brunswick and Canada, as defined by the treaty
of Washington, have been advanced the pat season,
we understand from the Boston Courier, •.vith much
i,rlustry and with much BUCCOS3. NO controversy or
misunderstanding of any moment has at iSen as to the
line described in the treaty, and it is not at all pro
bable that any doubt or difference of opinion can arise
in the minds of the co:nmissioners, respecting. the re
in tinder of the line to be Marked. The whole is clear
ty defined by the treaty, rind both connteies are r-pre
sinteti, in their commissioners, by i.itelligent, frank,
and liboral-minded gentlemen, who are above any petty
cavil in the disehrtrty 'of their important duties.
The houhdary has already been surveyed and m irk
el in sueb a way al to it •fine the limits of jurisdiction
of the respoctive gooeromoots, from the ohmoment n:
rho source of the River St. Croix, to the tut!tet of Lake
PJkonagamook, on 013 River St. No dispute
or collision, as to the. right of
. itaisdictiou, can there
f wohareafter arise upla this impnrtant portion "four
(Angier. It embraces the whole of Madawaska settle
inane, which is by for the mast p-apulou: portion of
the line, until it reaches the frontiers of Vermont and
Now York. Monuments of east iron have been cree
k I ;Oens the greater portion of the irreredian line, at I
ttedistance of one mile n-part, and tho whole of that
line will be thus marked bef tr,t the close of this sea
son's operations. The terminii of the straight line, be
tween the outlet of Lake Pokenagarnaole, and the
northwest bratieh of the St. John, have been cleterrni a
astronomically. in latitude and longitude, and the
renter part of the river St. John, has also been :it,:rt
rately surveyed.
The astronomical operations were still; however, go
ing on north of the 47th degree of latitude, ns late as
the sth of November, notwithstanding the country was
at that time covered with snow, nearly a foot deep.—
These operations are conducted, on the port of the Uni
ted States, by Major Gruhatn, cf. the United States
corps of Topographical Engineers, assisted by Lieuten
ant Meade of the s itn• corps, and on the part of Great
lititain,by Captain Robinson and Lieutenat Pipon, of
the corps of Royal Engineers. The labors of these gen ,
tdernen will probably close, for the present season, by
the middle of November.

Travellers should select Boats provided with
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
IT would be well for the • traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at thu expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all men who understand the
principles of the Stearn'Errine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful ' disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
that your lives mar be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid those dis
asters.
All boats marked thus C."l in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety award.
