rir We refer our readers to a notice o
Wswes.Painting, which if read through, will doubtless
in skis right kind of spirit for the cultivation of the
16Werts, and the informaation of Bible history, and
when we have offered for our inspection a sublime and
wonderful work like this almost for nothing, does it
Dot become the citizens to give It a liberal patronage.

ADAMS' RECEPTION.—As several of our su

Amon, on Friday last, we publish it, and the reply of
ifr:A.,in our columns this morning. We publish
front the Gazette's report, which we understand is

E i r ). new work has made its appearance in the
extern cities called the "Mysteries of New York,"
written after the fasliion of the "!Mysteries of Paris."
It is said to be a publication of a very immoral ten
dency, and, of coarse it will have a tremendous run.
THE OSAGE RIVER,
A movement is made in Missouri to obtain an ap
propriation for the improvement of the Osage. This
premises to become an important stream. Judge
Willie gives this account of it:
"The Osage river is very like the Ohio above Mariet
ta,-and but little less than the Ohio there in width.- 1 .
But the scenery on its banks is much more picturesque.'
ronisetic, variegated and beautiful. Like the Ohio,
it ti &succession of pcols or basins, and ripples, the
water cleat, current; gentle; shores of small yellow pol
ished gravel.so clear of mud and so solid, that for half
a mile, or a 'mile, in many places,
a white slipper would
not.be soiled by walking on it; the bed uniformly of
gravel or small rock, no reek to injure a vessel in its
whole course, except at one place called Rock Rapids
of - 2011 F yards in length. There they are loose and
easilyremoved. The fall in the 200 yards is only 1
foot. 65-100, with a minimum depth at low water of
33 feet. The banks are remarkably permanent, and,
us an inevitable consequence, but few logs (sawyers)
or snags appear in the river. In a very low stage ofl,
water, it was found to afford a minimum volume of wa
tch' 0f131,000 cubic feet per minute. The river has
bean known sixty years, a.ni only two freshets in that
tinie; limit been known to g o over its common alluvial
banks; the highest of which banks arc (in the lower
patter the river) only 18 or 20 feet }deb. One of these
fteshets.was in 1837, and the other 13 years previous
th:reto. The river abounds with the finest fish. Those
wilts are acquainted with the river may have some idea
of the quantity when I tell them I have stood on the
banks, , and withotn moving my foes, counted 7G fish of
ago ri size, lam well acquainted with many of the
fineSt rivers in Amerira, and I believe the Osage River
to he the mast beautiful one I have seen, There is an.'
other fa:t I will m rep.rd to the Osage River

FOE SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boats provided with
Evan's Safety Guardsfor preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
IT would be well fur the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of )oat that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is cadtrilinting towards a general introduction
of
I an invention admitted by all men who understand the
principle• of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousaudi• of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in evety case to give it the
preference. They have wont to an additional expense
that your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a correspondingdegree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do not charge more than other boats:
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many case. superior, and as there is
one ea
leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid those dis-
asters.
All boats marked thus ["]in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.
