It is said to be a publication of a very immoral ten
dency, and, of coarse it will have a tremendous run.
THE OSAGE RIVER,
A movement is made in Missouri to obtain an ap
propriation for the improvement of the Osage. This
premises to become an important stream. Judge
Willie gives this account of it:
"The Osage river is very like the Ohio above Mariet
ta,-and but little less than the Ohio there in width.- 1 .
But the scenery on its banks is much more picturesque.'
ronisetic, variegated and beautiful. Like the Ohio,
it ti &succession of pcols or basins, and ripples, the
water cleat, current; gentle; shores of small yellow pol
ished gravel.so clear of mud and so solid, that for half
a mile, or a 'mile, in many places,
a white slipper would
not.be soiled by walking on it; the bed uniformly of
gravel or small rock, no reek to injure a vessel in its
whole course, except at one place called Rock Rapids
of - 2011 F yards in length. There they are loose and
easilyremoved. The fall in the 200 yards is only 1
foot. 65-100, with a minimum depth at low water of
33 feet. The banks are remarkably permanent, and,
us an inevitable consequence, but few logs (sawyers)
or snags appear in the river. In a very low stage ofl,
water, it was found to afford a minimum volume of wa
tch' 0f131,000 cubic feet per minute. The river has
bean known sixty years, a.ni only two freshets in that
tinie; limit been known to g o over its common alluvial
banks; the highest of which banks arc (in the lower
patter the river) only 18 or 20 feet }deb. One of these
fteshets.was in 1837, and the other 13 years previous
th:reto. The river abounds with the finest fish. Those
wilts are acquainted with the river may have some idea
of the quantity when I tell them I have stood on the
banks, , and withotn moving my foes, counted 7G fish of
