LAMS COMPANION TOR NOVILPIHER.--Cook has
• received this excellent Magazine. It contains two find
engravings, The Stolen Child," and "The Bridal
Day." The story illustrative of the first, is written by
D. G. Fostcn, a writer well known in this city, and
who once distinguished himself in a certain coterie, by
a spirited controversy with the "fat Alderman" of our
city, fee hdringing on certain "Rules" of that dignitary.
Mr. F. is, notwithstanding all this, a ploo.sant writer,
though his articles are as light as gnsAatner. His vil
lains are all dignified and dark bowed fellows, who
go about like Don John in "Math Ado about Nothing,"
frowning and forming rascally plots—while his ladies
ate the gentlest and the brightest and the happiest of
ell imaginable beings. He has furnisbNl out the story
of the "Stolen Child" with a capital brace of charac
ters in these styles. It is, however, quite ns caul, if
tot better than the most part of fashionable Magazine
literature.
The remainder of the contents of the number i 4 made
up by hint. Sigourney, Orne, v..W. B. Tap
pan, Mts. Embury, and other well known writers.

A STEAMER WITHOUT A CHIMNEY.
Steamer Princeton—Much has been said by the New
York press iu favor of this new frigate. They conider
her one of the swiftest vessels of her clas4 ever upon
the ocean. She has no paddles at the sides, but what
i; still more remarkable, she has no smoke pipe. Lo
his most ardent praise of the importance and success of
steamboats, both upon the river and the seas, Fulton
never even suggested that they could be built a:td used
oithout a chimney. this is not only a new, but a most
extraordinaly improvement in the application of steam
to driving ships through the deep.

FOR SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boats provided wild
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers.
IT would be well fur the traveling community to
bear in Mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
au invention admitted by all men who undersuuid the
principles of the Steam Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those drew:lfni disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
taken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make ingniry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference•. They have went to an additional expense
that.your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of ha-,
num life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in mnny cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own power to avoid those dis
-114..r5.
All boats marked thus [`] in the List of A.rrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are ettpplied
with the Safety Guard.
