It was neces sap. to muss a stream, and a raft was constructed, and fourteen young women attempted to cross upon it.— When about midway over the stream the raft parted, and the whole were thrown into 4re water. Every ef fort was put forth to save theta, and all but cue were rescued alive. One young man nearly lost his life in striving to save her, and finally found ber lifele,;3 corpse and bore it to the shore.
