INDIVIDUAL AND INDEPENDENT PRINCIPLES
The public has long wished for Individual competition
in Transportation on the Public Works, by which alone
it can be freed from unnecessary expenses and reduced
to Its lowest rates; that wish will now be realized; the
State of Pennsylvania having placed Trucks on her Rail
Roads. Individual owning Portable Boats are enabled
to bid for the Carrying Trade and successfully to com
pete with compatOes.
This line iscompoeed of Twenty new, Four Section
Portable Boats, ow ned by the Captains who command
them and well known as enterprising, industrious and
experienced Boatmen.
The superiority anti advantages of the Portable Boat
over every other mode of Ttansportation, are too well
known to shippers generally, to require comment; suf
fice it to say, that the detention, luss.separation and dam
age to Goods, invariably attending three Transhipments
between Pittsburgh and Phiadelphia are by the Portable
Boat most effectually removed.
The Portable Boat pOssesses the great advantage too,
of being, well ventilated and cool in Summer; which pre.
rants Floor from souring, and Baron and Tobacco from
sweating.
El, Devine, standing as he does, between the owners
of goods and the Boat met who carry them, anti enantly
interested In protecting the interests of botA, will make
no promises to the public he will not faithfully perform.

Thus we felt eller having tried during one whole year

pain. Within one week, to the astonishment of Our-
