FOR THE, POST.
A charge having been publicly made in the Demo
cratic Convention this day against one of the delegates
from Mifflin township, for having violated his iIIStTUC
i ions in not voting on second ballot for a certain candi
date for Sheriff, we feel it our duty, in justice to the
delegates from that Township, to state that the charge
is utterly unfounded: no instructions were given to the
delegates at the primary meetings as regarded their
votes for Sheriff, any farther than to support Major
Large: beyond this they were left entirely free to exer

HISTORICAL FACTS.
Itisa singular fact, that during the whole seven
. years' war of the revolution, the British were never
permitted to rest for a single night on Connecticut
soil. They made cone tted attempt;, and iu three or
.fear instances succeeded in some little inroad into our
• state, hut they were not permitted to remain securely
for en hoar. Daring the revolution, Co inecticut pro
tetedharself, and furnished inure n and m -ney, iu
•reportion to her population and means, for tho de
eritip3 ortha country than any other state. On the day
'succeeding the "Lexington Alarm" eighty-four com
panies volunteered and were on their way for the "re-
Vero( Boston." At the battle of Bunker Hill, a Con
necticut farrnsr was in command, though Massachu
settsman are unwilling to acknowledge it—Connecti
cut troops were the first to engage the enemy, and the
last to quit the field.
The first blow struck by the Colonies—the first ef
ficient act—was the taking of Ticonderoga, which was
planned in Connecticut, and the expense was defrayed
from our Treasury, :t-,d the troops were almost exclu
sively Connecticut m 2.), Id emigrants from this state,
'under Ethan Allen, a n ttive of Connecticut.
Over one half of the troops under Gen. Washington
in New York, in 1776, were (min this state. His army
consisted of 27,000, of whom rising 14,000 were from
Connecticut. Of the 26 regiments of militia in this
state, in that year 24 regiments were called into ac
tive service,most of which was rendered in other states.
Andagain in 1777, there wan almost a general levy.
In addition to contributing beyond any other state,
in proportion to resources, to the continental army,
Connecticut during the whole war defended her own
soil, although exposed on three frontiers. An efficient
coast guard was maintained through the whole war, to
protect us from the British shipping, which occupied
Long Island Sound. 011 the east we were exposed
while the British had possession of Rhode Island, and
on the west we had to keep up a line of defences against
invasions from the enemy, who had possession of New
York. In front, and on the flanks, this state was ex
posed; yet she defended herself, and maintained fifteen
reriments in, besides contributing by volunteers and
drifts to, the continental army.
Ocher States have boasted of their deeds, and some
knell have been disposed to disparage ours, but not one
the Old Thirteen can show more service, generously
und freely eiven, without self-glorification far the part
sbe acted, than Connecticut. Massachusetts has arro
late& under the appellation of New England much of
the hoaest credit that is dies to other of the Eastern
States. Some tsf her writers have been so ungenerous
as to deny to honest old Putnam the fame that belongs
;to him at Bunker bill. They are uawilling to aeknowl
ndgo their indebtedness to a Cu:met:dent Farmer—and

necticut and New IlampAire. Indeed we are told by
a gentleman who WAS present, that, judging- from the
speachus a d remarks, there were oak two States of
any note in the Union, and those two are Mass tchusetts
awl- Virginia. While these two States arc entitled to
great credit fur the part they acted, there were other
States that made as great sacrift;es, and whose conduc t
IsGss as disinterested to say the least. Connecticut had
bean a fa:ored colony of the government—had received
special m trks offavor—her ports were not closed—no
armed troops wire on our soil, but animated with a
right srdrit, she flew to arms, and poured out with gen
erous devotion her golden and living treasure to sustain
the righteous cause of freedom, when attacked in anoth
er colony. These things deserve remembrance

Statea indemnity, due on the first inst., was paid in the
city of Mexico on the 25th ult.
The airiect of political affair.; in Mexico was tran

ed in the different sections of the republic.
