(There was considerable excitement, we under.
stand, at the Temperance meeting on Tuesday evening
in consequence of the stand taken by the "Spirit of the
Age" in favor of "ardent spirits." The editor, we are
talk', was present at the meeting, and evinced consid
erable compunction for his attack on the Temperance
cause, and appeared to be willing to unsay a good deal
of what he had said if the Washingtonians would shake
lands and make friends. But the "old Missionary,"
who had been approached, was quite grum and did not
appear to be inclined to a reconciliation; which conduct
excited the temper of our cotemporary to such a de
gree, that ho used language towards some of the tem
perance men, which, in his cooler moments, he would,
we are certain, condemn. We understand that a full
&menet of all the difficulties arising out of the proceed
loped- the meeting at the foot of Market street, on last
'Saturday evening, will be published in the next num.

MGEILY IIIirPOUTANT.—Some person is amusing
himself by writing bills and attaching the name of a
well known cii izen to them, and pasting them up on the
street corners. The following Ls one of these libellous
bills with the omission of the name of the gentleman
whom it is intended to annoy:
CAUTION No 2.
I D-- M—, of the city of Pittsburgh, takes this
way ofaxpressing myself about publick opinion. The
publick says, that I have not laming to fill an office,
this I pronounce false, its well known I graduated in
Noblestown College; there I read several authors on
the - dead lanzua.-es. lam now master of three, the
English the Irish and Dutch. Thats more than Alph
has and he has had a good office. All this I state to a
wise publick and remain theirservant,
Tbisr mode of announcement is not only wrong, but
highly dangerous to the persons who indulge in it, as
they - would be severely punished if found out. We
know the gentleman well whose acquirements are set
forth - in theabov e notice, and although he may have a
perfect knowledge of the English, Trish and Dutch,
besides havin g "read several authors on the dead lau
lkultreiLwe do not suppose he would desire to have
ins hittrning published to the world as it is in the above
handbill. Ho may be called, emphatically, a "man of
tnodat merit" and although the above citutioa pur
mute have been written by himself, we feel certain
that. nothing is more calculated to get up his "Irish,'
than such an egotistical display of his capacities for
office, andif be should get hold of the writer, he will no
doubt talk."high Dutch" to him in sm:11 a manner as
will prevent a repitition of the alone°.

Mr. S. V. Merrick states that the metal having been
long enough in use to test its merits fully, he has no
hesitation in saying that it is one of the most valuable
improvements that has come to his notice. The efll.cts
produced are: a great diminution in friction; a saving
in oil---one half or more; an economy in the original
construction, the brass. s being much lighter: a saving
in repair, the metal lasting longerand being replaced at
a less cost; and a saving in fuel, consequent upon di

These lined boxes have been introduced in many of
the Eastern Rail Roads, and in various manufacturing
establishments in that section of country, to which the
limits of an advertisement will not allow us to refer, and
nearly thirty well known superintendents,engineers,ma

the use of these boxes, friction is reduced M a remark

the wear is hardly perceptible, during a period in which
a hard metal box of the same thickness would be worn
out; journals running in these boxes attain a smoother
surface than they have seen on those which have been
run in any other box." They also certify "that thepa
