In rather a troubled state of mind was the witty and
gallant Count. The mention of proofs in writing had
alarmed him, although he could not imagine haw such
proof could exist when he had his original manuscript
in his possession. To assure himself of the fact, he pul
led the manuscript from his pocket and commenced
counting the sheets. In doing so, he discovered that
one of his own was missing, and that its place had been
supplied by a sheet in the handwriting of Griffet.—
"Can it be," he exclaimed, "that he has betrayed me!
