rpHE subscriber would respectfully inform his cus
tomers and the public generally; that notwithstad
ing the unprecedented sales at the Three Bi g Doors,
:during the present season; he has still on hand the lar
• gest. and most varied assortment of elegant CEO
THING that can be bought west of the mountains.—
The public may rest assured that all articles offered at
his_ store are maufactured from FRESH GOODS, pur
chased in Eastern markets this spring and made in
to ,
garments by ritusnurg,n workmen.
In consequence of the multiplication of slop shops in
our city, filled with pawn brokers clothes and the musty,
cast off garments of former seasons, from the eastern ci
ties, the public should be cautious to ascertain the char
acter of the establishments in which they are invited to
,purchase, before they part with their money. The arti
cles offered at sm end of the concerns in this city, are
the mere offals of New York and Philadelphia slop
shops, and sent out here to be palmed off on the Pius
burgh public. Purchasers 'hould be on their guard a
gainst these impositions, and they may rely on the fact
thatno establishment thatadvertises eastern made Clo
thing, can give as good an article or as advantageous
bargains as can be had at the "Three Big Doors."
Titepublie will please remember that all the subscri
li made in this city,by competent work
men, and not gathered up like the goods now offered by
the'"birtis ofpassage" from the shreds and patches of
eastern slop shops. It will always be his endeavor to
Maintain the reputation that the "Three Big Doors"
have obtained for furnishing a superior style of CLO
THING in every respect, and at prices, below those of
any other establishment.
t He wouldagain return his thanks to his friends and
oho public for the unprecedented patronage bestowed
upon his establishment, and believing that they have
found it to their advantage to deal with hint, he would

THE attention of those who have been somewhat
1 sceptical in reference to the numerous certifi
-canes published in favor of Dr. Swayne's Compound
Syrup of. Wild Cherry, on account of the persons being
unknown in this Section of the State, is respectfully di

elaS been a citizen of this borough for several years, and
is known as a gentleman of integrity and responsibility.
To the Agent, Mr. J. KIRBY.
Ihaveused Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup of Wild
Cherry for a Cough, with which I have been severely
--afflicted for about four months, and I have no hesitation
- in saying that it is the most effective medicine that I
have been able to procure. It composes all uneasiness,
„ d t
and agrees well with my diet,—and maintains a regular
Ismi good appetite. I can sinceiely recommend it to all
others similarly afflicred. J. MINNICK, Borough of

The Secret Pamphlet.
A TALE OF THE TIME OF LOUIS ZVZ
"The Bastille!" exclaimed both mother and drag&
ter.
"No! I villhave nothing to do with it ) " replied co.
"That is beyond your control now."
"Not so. I procured for myself the honor, &wise*
I decline it. lam not the author of the roseephlet."
"No matter, youhave acknowidgeed it.
"But what if I was mistaken? We are all of us go
ble to mistakes—they will happen, you know." -
"Never mind, that won't save you; I have ordert to
arrest von: so march."
"No; I will not march. Nothing but fuccealsolltoot
me from this spot so long as Cecile is here. The Nip
tille shall never see anything of rue of ray own fres
will."
"We will see about that—perhaps acoupit of testaft
fiery will be able to prevail upon yaw," ana °rift
made his exit in search of the officers.
"Is there no means of justifying yourself, my pew
Coleclie!" exclaimed Madame Giniud.
- . . .
"Means! ah, yes; I have an idea; that sheet at des
manuscript copy which I have saved! that will ohm
me, if you will help me."
"Commlnd us!" exclaimed both mother and dank
ter.
"You, Madame Giraud—run--overtake the Ansbao•
sador—and call him to one side and tell him Erma*
that he shall know all; I will give him a proof, a it
ten proof. And you, Cecile, in the inesirabile, riot to
your house, in my chamber you will find ray portfollxx
open it; you will see anion; other papers a small mane•
script—a single sheet with the name of Joseph 11,
written three or four times on each page; bring it to
me—quick—run--be as fast as you can,--and, far
safety, hide it in your bosom—there--burly'."--and
Madame and Cecile set out upon their respective eir
ranch with all speed.
"Bravo!" exclaimed Coleche, capering about the
room and cutting such antics as none but an excited
Frenchman can cut. "Bravo! a lucky thought! A
most luminous ideal The Bastille' bah!-4 shell es
cape it yet. What the could have putit Maly heed
to turn author and wit— the ides is :idieuioss
'twas a mistake—but all men are liable to mistakese•-
-Turenne even, and Richlim. and Julius Coney all
ado mistakes in their time , true greatness consists
in remedying them after they are made; and I Minh I
can do that in the present case. What a morning this
has been—and era in my life—a constant succession
of ups and downs!—the clowns, however, I must say,
rather predominate."
Coleche's was cut short by the entrance of the Misr
ister, nho had contrived to shake off the Ambassador,
and had hurried back to have an explamation with
the bizarre printer, who appeared to knew so mach of
an affair in which he was so deeply interested , Ad
vancing on tip-toe to Coleche, he said "Listen-.-I have
not a moment td spare; lam afraid we shall be inter.
rupted. I have come back expressly to see you, sad
to say that lam perfectly satisfied with what yon have
done."
"Ah!" ejaculated the sagacious Coleche, who began
to perceive a new chance for escape.
"Yes, whatever may have been your motive, 'you
shall be rewarded—largely rewarded."
"Ali, ha!" said the printer to himself, "I smell as
'You will go the Bastille."
" Ah, there comes a down!"
"But vou will remain but ten days; the Queen is so
good. I will interest myself fur you, and afterwards
I'll see that vou are fully satisfied,"
"Decidedly an up!" muttered Caliche.
"There is only one condition—which is, that you re
main always the author of the pamphlet in the eyes of
the Ambassador."
"Decidedly a down!"
"What is that you say?"
"Nothing, nothing—confound my
but perhaps there is time yet, if Madame Gioia bas
nut already found the Ambassador."
"The Ambassador?"
-Yes, and Cecile—the sheet a manuscript which
she has gone to grt—"
-
"The manuscript! what manuscript? where is it?"
'• In the bosom of her dress—l'll run and meet her,'
—and Cole che was rushing out when he was interrupt
ed by the Duke, who came in out of breath with the
haste he had made, upon the reception of the message
with which Madame Giraud had been charged.
“Your Excellency! you have not been informed al
ready! You have not encountered an old woman?"
"1 have."
"Oh, Mon Dieu! this is a regular down."
"Monsieur 3laurepas here before me!" mattered
the Duke. "Ali! I begin to und-rstand something of
this mystery. I have come back, — he continued aloud.
"to learn the name of the author which this fellow pro
mises to reveal and to furnish me with proofs in wri-

ting."
"In writing!" exclaimed the Count, seizing CoMelte
by the arm. "Have you such proof'?"
"No, it's all a mistake,"
"You have not!" said the Duke. "Well, then, I
will see that you are imprison until you find some.—
If you don't confess I ty . nye you in the mines or
Spielberg, for life."
"And if you speak 1 .4 word," whispered the Count,
"you shall pass your like in the dungeons of Vincen
nes."
"Well, come—this is pleasant! If this is not a. pre
dicament! The mines or the dungeons—hard to choose!
lam down now decidedly. Confound all luminous ide
as—l'll have no more of them."
At this moment Griffet entered with his officers, to
whom the Duke gave orders to take charge of Caliche
for an hour, assuring him that if. at the end of that time,
he did not confess the name of the author, he should be
conducted to prison. "I must see the Queen for a few
minutes. li. uponmy return, you give me the informa
tion I want, I will pledge you her protection against
all harm, and a reward of twenty-five thousand franca.
If not, you may well dread the consequences," and the
mystified and angry Duke made his exit in one direc
tion, while Coleche, accompanied by Griffet and the
officers, was marched off in another, leaving the Minis
ter alone.
In rather a troubled state of mind was the witty and
gallant Count. The mention of proofs in writing had
alarmed him, although he could not imagine haw such
proof could exist when he had his original manuscript
in his possession. To assure himself of the fact, he pul
led the manuscript from his pocket and commenced
counting the sheets. In doing so, he discovered that
one of his own was missing, and that its place had been
supplied by a sheet in the handwriting of Griffet.—
"Can it be," he exclaimed, "that he has betrayed me!
and this printer—what does he know of the alfairt—
Mon Die a! this will be a second edition of my adven
ture under Louis XV.—A dismissal! Morbleu!
shall leave a reputation for maladroitness, which wil y .
stick to my name forever, I am ruined unless some
lucky chance saves me!"
The door opened. and Cecile rushed into the r00m...—.
••Culecht!" and she pulled the paper from her bosom
'•Coleche! here—quick . -
Seeing the Count, she paused, embarrassed., and
hastily thrust the paper back, but not so quicia l t m• to
escape the MinisteCi. observation.
"Cecile. my pretty child, come here. I w*attimpaak
a word uich you."
Cecile enrrie enrefully crossingher kerchief
upon her breast.
"This printer--this Coieche :von were jest ceiling--
do you know him!"
'Know him! when I. love him, and havecogagb, 3, to

"Ah, ah!—l see—come closer, my sweet Cecile! I
am very much interested in %-ou—l am disposed. to do
