In consequence of the multiplication of slop shops in
our city, filled with pawn brokers clothes and the musty,

purchase, before they part with their money. The arti

Trarellers should select Boats provided with
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers
TT would be well fur the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all men who understand the
principles of the Steam - Engine, to be a sure preventa
tive against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
nken place, their almost daily occurrence, and the
thoersands sit lives that have all eady been lost, a suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry fur a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
that your lives may be secure. Ought y ou nut t h ere f ore
to meet them with n corresponding degree of liberality,
and by your preference show that von appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of 'hu
man They do not charge more than other boats;
their acconuntxlations in other respects are equal, and
in marry cases superior; and as there is one leaving
Pittsburgh even day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your Own power to avoid those dis
asters.
All boats marked thus [." ] in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.

PRICE, TWO CENTS.
Many mouths passed, and one evening it
that Mlle de Scruderi was crossing the Pvin h t tW if
ff'
the glass coach of the Dutches de Montasier. Cassia
ges, of that construction had but recently come iota
use and they consequently attracted much Weft
tion from the people in the streets. The orowd - cos

was drawn to one side by the sound of an angry exam.
mation, and she obserc;rl a man making his wayess
gerly through the crowd, boating and th rusting aside
those who prevented him. As he came tearer she
caught a glimpse of his face; it was that of a
young man, pale and distorted, as it seemed, with agi*
tation. His eyes were fixed steadily upon her. With
difficulty he made his way to the door of the carriagep
which he pulled open in violent haste, and throwing a
paper in Scuderi's lap, retreated again and disappeared
among the crowd. Mariniere, who was inside with
her miitress when the man opened the door, shrieked
and fell back swooning. Her lady pulled the stein
and called to the coachman in vain; ho escaped frost
the crowd, gave the reins and whip to the horses, and
they, shaking the foam from their mouths, scampered
lustily over the bridge. Scuderi held her smelling-boor
tle to the nostrils of her fainting maid; and at last Mit
tiniero opened her eyes and recovered sense enough to
speak. Trembling and faltering, she cried, "Who is
that man? Ahl it is the y same, the very same who
brought you the casket of jewels on that terrible
night!"
Scuderi endeavored to quiet her maid, assuring
her that no harm had come to them; vet she could not
herself help feeling more than ordinary cariosity fainters, -
what her note contained. As soon as a light could be
procured, she opened the paper, and read as followg
"A dreadful fate, which you could avert. thrusts the
to the abyss! I conjure you, by all that is sacred, by
the love of a son to his honored mother, to send tlet

your life, hangs thereon. If tills be not done to-mor•
row, I will force my way into your house, and murder
myself before your eves."
"Now it is certain," said Mlle de Senderi, "that
even if this strange young man really belongs to the band
of robbers, he has no ill purpose against me. Had he
succeeded in obtaining an interview with me that night
who knows but he might have disclosed circumstances-
which would have made clear what seems now so IN,

ill-boding jewels, that have seemed to me a mXastr - nif
evil. Cardiallac will be true to his old' habits, Oa not
let them out of his hands so easily again."
The next the lady resolved to go herself and carry the
casket to the jeweller. But it seemed as if everything
conspired to prevent her having a moment's leisure. -7
All the wits in Paris chose that morning to call upoit
her, and beset her with verses, anecdotes, and plays.
Rachine paid her a long visit; and after that it was time
for her to go to the Dateless de NiontatLii:r; so thattle
visit to Cardillac was postponed till next day.
The poor lady slept ill that night; two or three times
sbe started, almost thinking she saw the young man
standing before her, with his pale, gloomy face, the
features of which she well remembered: the more so f
as they called up some indistinct recollection of peat
years. Early in the morning she rose, had dressed
herself, and drove to the house of the goldsmith, bear"
ing with her fated casket.
Thu street Niceise, whe.r2 Cardillac lived, was
thronged with people., and a dense crowd was collected
before his house. There were cries, shouts, and ester
crations; and the multitude seemed to be with difficul
ty testrained by the police, who were in possesaion-of
the house. Desgrais, with several of his men, were ail
the steps-. Thu house-door was opened, and a man
was brought out chained, and led away, amid the wild
execrations of the populace. Scuderi, much terrified,
called to her coachman to go forward; bat the carriage
was already hemmed in by the crowd, and they were
i compelled to stop just in front of the house. At the
next glance, Scuderi saw a beautiful young girl, in the
wildest abandonment of grief, kneeling at the feet of
Desgrais. She cried in tones of heart-rot:ding anguish,
"He is innocent! He is innocent!" Desgrais strove to
release himself from her. A strout. rude soldier sel;
zed her by the arm, and pulled her from him; wheel
the soldier let go her ann, the pour girl fell helplessly
on the pavement, and lay there insensible. Sewieri
could bear this no longer.
s. "In }leaven's name, what has happened!" cried she:
and ordering the door opened, she stepped out of the
carriage. Some compassionate women lifted up the
young girl, placed her on the steps, and. rubbed hew
forehead and hands with spirits; while the lady made het
way to Desgrais, and eagerly repeated her questiotes,-.-
The - official answered bluntiv:
JAMES YATES
"Rene Cardillac was this morning found naurdeated.
His assistant, Olivier Brusson, is the murderer. • Ha
has just been carried to prison."
"And the girl?" inquired Mlle de Studeri;
"She is Madelon, Cardillac's daughter. The pries
oner is her lover, and she is protesting his innocence.
She has at least a knowledge of the deed, and I mull
send her also to the Conciergerie."
As he spoke he threw a fierce look at the poorgitL--
She was beginning to breathe heavily, but had no posrew
to move or speaks, her arms hung motionless, her em
were closed, and the bystanders seemed at a loss whet
to do with her. The good lady's eyes filled with teen
as she looked on this sad spectacle. The crowd NI
back a little, and Cardillac's corpse was beciughtans of
the house. Mlle Scuderi called to Deere's:
"I will take the girl with me; I will be anarterable
for her."
A murmur of approbation ran through the multitude.
The women lifted her up and bore her to tho carriage,
which soon drove back to the Rue St. Honort.
A physician was summoned immediately; and after
some time, 'Madelon was recalled from her state din
sensibility. Her compassionate hostess completed
what the physician had begun, by whispering to her
words of hope; and a flood of tears soon came to ber re
lief. She was then able, thoueh often interrupted by.

it.
