arenas, to-morrow, the publication of a most interest
ing talc under this title, from the pen of Hoffman, a dis
liztiptis' hed German writer, translated by Mrs. E. F.
Eliot. To those who delight in such reading, the story
of "Cardillac" will prove a rich treat. We have rarely
met with a tale of more intense and absorbing inter
est.
TELUTRE.-It will be seen by an advertisement in
t o-day's paper, that the Theatre will b 3 opened by Mr.
Wm. P. HEs.srucos. Mr. H. has had much exper
ience as a Manager, and he assures the public that his
cerepanywill be unsurpassed in talent and respectabilty.

ALEXANDER BRACKENRIDGE, Esq.—We publish
• • morning the reasons given by "A DEMOCRAT,"
itity he does nut desire the nomination of ALEXANDER
; tfilitacaastuoor for Congress. The reader will ob
serve that the objections offered are not very forcible,
but all who know Mr. B. must admit that they are the
• strongest that tan be found in the coursz! of his long and
useful residence in Allegheny county. If Mr. B. should
isop nominated, we have no doubt bui he would be a
-Ifaithfal, active menther, and industriously serve the in
'crests of his constituents.
MOROZZGAIIELA. IMPROYEMENT.—We copied an ar
. ticleyesterclay from the Gazette on this subject—upon
inquiry we regret to learn that no contract has been
7 made for the completion of that work. It is true, that
Messrs. LOTHROP & -110118E1E1.D made a proposition
to completethe navigation to Brownsville, and make all
necessary repairs, provided the tolls were secured to
thorn until the amount of their contract would be paid
ia full; this the board were willing to do, but we e una
ble, as they have notmeans to pay the present liabilities
of she company, and release the proceeds from incum
-brance, consequently there is no contract entered into,
and but little prospect of this very important work be
ing completed.
- We are pleased to learn, however, that the company
have made some arrang nits to secure the comple
tion of the repairs at Darn No. 1.
8A8111T . 13 AITI-ATTRITION METAL.—We invite at
tention to the advertisement of this new and important
article. The trials which have been made, sufficiently
prove itsenperier usefulness in the deportment of the
mechanic arts for which it is iltendad. The ordeal
the work of a locomotive engine is about as severe a
one u ceuki be. desired; and the quality of the metal
nears no endorsements, after having stood the friction
neceassaly incurred in running such an engine 30,000
miles.
..The teifimenials of praezicil and scientlacm^n eat
oflbe motintaMs of the sul)eriority of this metal, are,as
will be seen by the als•eezi+ement, fully borne out by
cmppetentem;i7.eers, and by Mr. Lyon, in whose estab
liabment it was introduced some weeks since.

Alas! we people of Pittsburgh, of ail ethers who most
need ablutions of water, assisted by soap. have no 'dace
where a comfortable bath can be indulged in for that
price,—exeept it be at the river, where it is free, if the
boys wouldn't steal your clothes—a confoundedly disa

be established!

A S AVAGZ BE.A.R..—Aa English paper says that one
of the most singular names ever met with is that of a
gentlemen of fortune in Kent. His family name was
Bear, and as he had maternal relatives of the name of
Bayer, his parents gave him the Christian (or rather

the pleasant and amiable nem:: of Savage Bear, Esq.

hours of 9 &clock, A. M., and 4, P. M., by order,

To the Cent mill :loners.
• . Q.
THE undeisigned will offer at PUIALIC SALE, or
Lease, on Saturday, the 18tk of Notember next,
at 10 o'clock, A. M., that valuable property, on the
south side of the Monongahela river, opposite this city,
lately laid off in lots, embracing between 20 and 30
acres of ground.
—We will co:n-
This is well known to be the most advantageous lo
caticn for manufacturing purposes in the vicinity of our
great manufacturing city, having an extensive front on
the river, and extending back to Coal Hill, celebrated
for the quality of its coal over any other, and in which
immediate vicinity and extending back are inexhausti
. ble mines; railways from which can be run directly in
!
to works on this property, as is now done in the neigh
; borhood. There are also several strata of coal beneath
! the surface on this property, which will be valuable in
! time, by the use of shafts, one of which is ascertained
to be 12 to 15 feet in thickness.
A portion of the property being elevated above the
proper level, and the clay being of the best quality for
brick making, can be used very advantageously in im
provements.
Its advantageous location for Manufacturing aLd
Building, the Slack Water Navigation of the Mononga
hela, its being nearly opposite the mouth of the Penn
sylvania Canal, and affording every facility for the re
ception of materials by river, at all seasons when navi
gable at any other point in the vicinity of the city, its
proximity and connexion with which,as will be the ca se
by a bridge so soon it becomes occupied, altogether
render it in every point ofview, one of the most desira
ble locations for investment and improvement.
Notwithstanding the number of extensive Works
which have been erected within the past few years, man
' ufuctures have never flourished more successfully than
at present, the yearly increasing extent of our city, the
1 immense emigration to the West, and its unequalled
rapid settlement, which our city must ever, as it now
does, most advantageously supply with manufactures, •
will yearly increase the demand, and great as is our
character as a manufacturing place, when we review
the great increase in number and extent of mann
factures within the past few years, we must consider it
in its infancy, as the great manufacturing and commer
cial point it is des,t.,,ined to become.
In addition to tliCmanufacturing of Iron, Nails, Glass,
Engines and Machinery, Cotton Yarns, &c. which are
operated advantageously here, we require in this region
manufactories of Cotton Goods, as the immense quanti
ties of these articles yearly brought from the East for
this, and Western and Southern maskets evince, the
profits to the different hands generally through which
they pass between the manufacturer and the western
merchant, would satisfy a manufacturer; in addition
there is"the carriage west to east of the materials, and
east to west of the manufactured articles, besides insur- !
ante, time, &c., offering every inducement to compan
ies of our own or Eastern Capitalists beyond competi
tion.
Applications have been made for a number of years
past for locations on this property for Manufacturing
and Building purposes, and it has been laid off into lots
containing nearly an acre on the river, for the former,
and 24 by 100 feet for the latter purpose, fronting on
50 feet streets, and 20 feet alleys.
It will be sold in a body, (exclusive of a few lots) or
portions will be sold together: to suit the views of indi
viduals or companies wishing to purchase, or otherwise
separately in lots. Some lots may be exchanged for
buildings on this property, or for a farm.
The terms will be made perfectly easy, only a small
portion required down, and the remainder in a term of
years, payable annually or otherwise.
It is not desired to dispose of the property under the
late and still existing depression of real estate, except
for its fair value, but Tref' the frequent app:icatio EIS for
its purcha-e, and the ioducerneats oT Tad at proi.e it for
imprwements, every article and expense c , nnected
therewith being so low, it is consid.Tel the present
possession for these purpo person- or rmitpa.lic
of wealth, would be so alv:Litageous w th eat, tozether
with the terms on which it is offored, that induces the
offer of sale at this time. NEVILLE B. CRAIG.

Bawdy for the Influenza.
1111 E Influenza, which is now in almos,t. a nnivttyai
epidemic, is exciting the inventors of pseud
medicines to increased exertions in the rani Ibe,
but owing to the general distrust entertsmed for the
generality of such drugs, people fear taking them.--
The following, however, from a distinguished phra_
ciao in New ior!:, Dr. we think may be te
lied on:
"The object of the present conuminicatitut is to
ommend a single remedy, cheap and of easy access: 1n
the poor, and to caution them against an injurious 0110
in this disease, namely, bleeding, either general or by
leeches. In all those cases in which the first Glasser
symptoms prevail, let the patient smell frequently et
a common salts battle, (Sidle Arcrmatie Voketi7e
Salts are preferred) and by putting the vial to the
mouth to draw a few deep inspirations of volatile mat
ter into the hing.s. Let this process be repeated two
or three times in andiour, and it will give more speedy
and creator relief, in all slight cases ,sf the first class
than any other remedy, and will be sufficient for a
cure. It will also be essentially u.seful in the severe
cases; and those of the class of prostration , a fear
drops of amonia, or hartshorn, ought to taken: inter
nally. A neat way of doing so is to take an old fast*
ioned mixture called lac ammoniaci. However, it hi
as a local remedy, to act on the disordered surface,
that its use is advised. The principles will be recog
nized be all physicians versed in molecular organiza
tion, and these alto arc deficient in that knowledge
may do in that instance as they do in all othono—;eet
upon the faith they imbibe." nese salts are Cot sale
and within the reach of all classes, at Ws. Tams's,
