ABRAHAM J. CLENIER, residing at 66, Mott
street, New York, was afflicted with Dyspepsia
in its most aggravated form. The symptoms were cis
tient headache, great debility, fever, costiveness, cough,
heartbiirn, pain in the chest and stomach always after
, eating, impaired appetite, sensation of sinking at the
'stomach, furred tongue, nausea, with frequent vomit
lags' ; dizziness towards night and restlessness. These
bad continued upwards of a twelvemonth, .when, on
consulting Dr. Wm. Evans, 100 Chatham street, and
aubmitting to his ever successful and agreeable mode
,of treatment, the patient was completely restored to
health in the short space of one month, and grateful for
the incalculable benefit derived, gladly came forward

Better Bargains than ever, at the Three Big
Doors.
• • - rl HE subscriber would respectfully inform his cus
miners and the public generally, that notwithstad
. ing the unprecedented sales at the Three Big Doors,
during the present season; he has still on hand the lar
gest and triost varied assortrr.ent of elegant CLO
THING that can be bought west of the mountains.—
The public may rest assured that all articles offered at
his store are maufactured from FRESH GOODS, pur
chased in tha Eastern markets this spring and made in
to garments by Pitttsburgh workmen.
In consequence of the multiplication of slop shops in
our city, filled with pawn brokers clothes and the musty,
cast off garments of former seasons, from the eastern ci
ties, the public should be cautious to ascertain the char
acter of the establishments in which they arc invited to
purchase, before they part with their money. The arti
cles offered at several of the concerns in this city, are
the mere offal, of New York and Philadelphia slop
shops, and sent out here to be palmed off on the Pitts
burgh public. Purchasers should be on their guard a
gninet these impositions, and they may rely on. the fact
thatno establishment that advertises eastern made Clo
thing, can give as good an article or as advantageous
bargains as can be had at the "Three Big Doors."
The public will please remember that all the subscri
ber's garments are made in this city, by competeatwork
rnen, and not gathered up like the goods now offered by
the "birds of passage" front the shreds and patches of
eastern slop shops. It will always be his endeavor to
tnahatain. the reputation that the "Three Big Doors"
have obtained for furnishing a superior style of CLO
THING in every respect, and at price, below those of
stayother establishment.
.' l4l . 4 orHe Wonld again return his thanks to his friends and
the public for the unprecedented patronage bestowed
upon his establishment, and believing that they have
found it to their advantage to deal with him, he would
repeat his invitation to all those who wish to purchase

in saying that it is the most effective medicine that I

FOR SAFETY,
Travellers should select Boots provided with
Evan's Safety Guards for preventing Explosion of
Steam Boilers.
IT would be well for the traveling community to
bear in mind that their security depends entirely
upon their own encouragement of boats that have or
may be at the expense of procuring the above appara
tus. And that every individual making such selec
tions is contributing towards a general introduction of
an invention admitted by all men who understand the
principles of the Steam Engine,
to be a sure prevente
d% e against those dreadful disasters. You have cer
tainly, in the hundreds of explosions that have already
place,. their almost daily occurrence, and the
thousands of lives that have already been lost, a Suffi
cient warning, and inducement to make inquiry for a
Safety guard Boat, and in every case to give it the
preference. They have went to an additional expense
that your lives may be secure. Ought you not therefore
to meet them with a corresponding degree of liberality,
and by your preference show that you appreciate their
laudable endeavors to stop this awful sacrifice of hu
man life. They do not charge more than other boats;
their accommodations in other respects are equal, and
in many cases superior, and as there is ono leaving
Pittsburgh every day, why will you run any risk, when
it is so completely in your own - power to avoid those dis
asters.
All boats marked thus ]in the List of Arrivals and
Departures, in another part of this paper, are supplied
with the Safety Guard.

Landais' extraordinary conduct could not have been

"That Jones had many defects of clue -actor cer.
taro. They arose in part from temperanieni, and in
part from education. His constant declarations of that
delicacy of his sentiments, and of the digintereatednesa
of his services, though true in the main, were in a taste
that higher associations in youth would probably have
corrected. There was a loftiness of feeling about him,
j that disinclined him equally-to meanness and vulgarity;
and as for the coarseness of language and deportment
(that too much characterized the habits of the sea, in
his time, lie appears never to have yielded to them—.
All this was well in itself. and did him credit; but It
would have have been better had he spoken less (re,
quentiv of his exemption from such failings, and no
have alluded to them so often in his remarks on others.
"There was something in the personal character of
Jones that weakened his hold on his cotempuraties,
though it does not appear to have ever produced a want
of confidonce in his services or probity. Corn. Dale;
used to mention him with respect, and even with attach,
Menu often calling him Paul, with a degree of affection
that spoke well for both parties. Still it is not to bn
•on,c2aled -that a species of indefinite distrust clouded
his reputation even in America, until the industry_ of his
biographers, by means of indisputable documents Bali
his own volumnious correspondence, succeeded in pla
cing, him before the public in - a light too unequivocally
respectable to leave any reasonable doubts that public*
sentiment had silently done him injustice. The power
of England, in the way of opinion, has always b.-en great
in this country, and it is probable the discredit that 13a
ti an threw on the reputation of Jones produced an Witt,
once, more visible in its results than in its workings,
or his standing even with these he had so well served,
"In person, Jones was of the middle stature, witl-4r" ---
complexion that was colorless, and with a slain that
shuwed the exposure of the sea. He was well formed
and active. His cotemporaries have described him as
quiet and unpresuming in his manners, and of rather
retiring deportment. The enthusiasm which ran in se
deep a current in his heart was not of the obstrusive soil;
nor was it apt to appear until circumstances arose to call
it into action; then, it seemed to absorb all the other
properties of his being. Glory, he constantly avowed,
was his aim, and there is reason to think be did pot
mistake his own motives in this particular. It is per.
haps to be regretted that his love ofglory was so closely
connect:d with his personal vanity; but even this is
better than the glom which is sought as an iastrunient
of ruthless power.
" If an author maybe permitted to quote from him
self, we shall concaide this sketch 1-y nddinz what we
have already said, by way of :qui - Injury, of this remark-

loy it would be presumptuous to assert; but it apPears
certain that his defects were relieved by high proofs of
greatness, and that his deeds were no more than the
proper results of the impulses, taleuts and intrepidity of
the man.
