last, a child about 6 months old, of Mr
Standish Peppard, 2nd street, while at the
breakfast table, pulled the coffee-pot over,
and emptied its contents upon itself, which
so scalded it that its life has been in a very
precarious condition since.

Yesterday Coroner Chambers held an inquest
on the body of a man named Hugh Reeney, who

An Inquisition indented taken on the 10th day
,orPaly Da43, before me, John Chambers, Coro ter
of the county afore said upon the vtcw of the body
of Hugh Rooney, then and there lying dead in
yard of Mr. Smith in the sth ward, pone the
oaths of George Stewart, Dr. Haslet, %V. Math
eats, James Rubb, W. Gates, Alex. Robb, Jobe
Bates, Daniel Pence, J ihn Stewart, Jahn Hayj,
Joseph R. McG nubs, and Arthur Tiernan, good
and lawful men of the county aforesaid, who be
leg sworn and charged to inquire on behalf of the
Commonwealth, linsr, when, whera and after what
manner the said Hugh Rooney came to his death,
do say; That the said . Hugh Rooney came to his
death by exposure and want of care while laboring
wader the Influenza and Dropsy, and not other
wise. In witness whereof, as well the aforesaid
Coroner as the Jurors aforesaid, have to this In

at the place first above mentioned.
Inquest Jury cannot permit this occasion
to pass withhut expressing their dt•cided disap
probation of the general conduct of the Overseers
of the Poor of the city of Pi tsburgh, in reference
to distressed strangers, aid that, in the op'nion
of this Inquest, the Overseers of the Poor of the
should be residents of the city, in order that
they may be found when their services are requi
red. The Inquest are fully convinced that the
Overseers of the Poor are highly censurable for
their conduct in reference to Hugh Rooney, de
ceased, inasmuch as they had legal notice of the
distressed condition oe the deceased, at least twen
ty-four hours before his death, yet they suffered
