has fallen to :he lot of l lit few persons to have ettjoyed

Dr. It. A. Wilson, in the ptactice of medicine, (In innhs

So convenient, so efficient, and yet su see. did I esteem
These pills, that for the last five years In my pract ire for
the cure of chronic diseases, or hatever natnA, •nd hose
of females in particular, I have used more ol them than
all other medicines.
Like every WIWI medicine, this must fail in some in
stances, but In my hands there has been less disappoint.
ment and morn mist - art ion In t.tesdministrallon of this
one remedy than of all of hers; Its good effects sometimes
quite astonishing m..
If my patient ref:wired n sa fe aperient merlielne either

the thing I wanted.
►►e dyspeptic acid condition (lithe stomach, combined
with costiveness or inactivity of the liver. cons! ituted the
diseave ,1 my patient. the pills were just the thing ►
wanted.
If I treated a rase requiring an emmennogue, the
Wilson's pills were Jost the thing I wanted.
If palpitation, headache. flushed countenance, or other
difficulties, indiraiinz a disturbance of the circulatory
and secretory systems, annoyed my patient at the •turn
of tire,' the Wi11.0105 pills were joist the thine I wanted.
Thus, without resuJet to the name, a disease might
happen to wear at the. time I have had it under treat
ment, particular indications or symptom; arising. were
al - "ays nimt promptly and most happily met by the
Wilson's pills.
That so great a number of d kenses, and sometimes ap.
parently oppo-ile ones, in which I have used these pills,
should be clu ed more readily by 111P111 than by any of her
remedy, may at first seem strange and contradictory, but
why it Is so Is as clear to my mind as that a great many
persons should become thirsty frorni.s many different
causes, and yet all require that common and greatest of
all blessings, waler to quench their thirst.
In conclusion, it is due the eputationef the medicine
and the nubile, to any decidedly and unconditionally, that
the. Wilson's pills are the only combination I have ever
met with in my long course or practice, that really pod.
cessesanything curative or specik for sick headache.

The first, the fir t! taught like it;
Our alter years can bring,
For Summer heth no flowers so siveet
As those of early Spring.
The earliest storm that stripe the Ire*
Still wildest seems and worm;
- Whate'er hath been again may be;
But never as at first.-L
For many a totter blaet may bloW
® t er unCertath wave,
And many a thorny thicket grow
Between us and the gra‘e;
But darker still the spot appears
Where the thunder Clouds h a - ve burst
Upon our green tlnblighted yeara'
No gi ief is like the first?
Onr first born j , y,==-pereliance 111zas Vain,
Yet that brief lightning o'er,
The herrt, indeed, may hope again
But can rejoice nn more,
Life hath no glory to brstow--
Unfallell and unounsed;
Theme may be many an afterglow,
But nothing like the first!
The rays of hope may light us on
Through manhood's toil ari i strife;
But never can they shine as shone
The mornirg Stars of lire;
Though bright . as summer's rosy wtelithi
Though tong and fondly nursed.
Yet still they want the fearless faith
Of those that blest ua first.
It's first love deep in memory,
The heart fcrever bears;
For that was early given and free- - z - -
Life's wheat without the tares.
It may be Death bath buried deep,
It may Ire Fate bath cursed;
But yet no latter love can keep
The greenness of the fire'.
And thus, what e'er our onward way,
Tholights or shadow's ca,t
Upon the dawning of our day
Are with us to the hist,
But, ah ! the-morning breaks no mtre
On us, as one© it burst;
The !attire Springs can ne'er restore
The freshness of the first.

SCENES IN OREGON AND ON THE
ROCKY MOUNTAINS.
Some interesting sketches and descrip.
Lions of scenes in the Far West are con
tained in Farnham's Tiavels—a book re—
cently published in New York, Mr.
Farnham left Independence, Missouri, with
sixteen men, in May, 1830. From thence
he took the Santa Fe Trail, till he crossed
the Great Arkansas, _ the 'River of the
Plains.' Thence the party went up the
Arkansas, till they came in si ght
. of James's
Peak, the source of the Arkansas. This
to the extreme southwestern corner of the
territory of the United States. Here the
vast and sublime heights of the Rocky
mountains rose before them, their tops
made white and dreary with eternal snows.
From this, they passed the mountains
through a gap, and reached the waters of
the Oregon at Fort Hall. Thence they
passed down the valley of the Columbia.
The following extract is descriptive of
a series of a natural soda fountains which.
among other objects of natural curiosity.
met the view of the travelers:
'The immediate neighborhood of our
encampment is one of the most remarka
ble it. the Rocky mountains. The facts
that the trail to Oregon and Califlrnia
will ErreVer, of necessity, pass within 300
yards of the place where our camp fire is
burning—that near this spot must be
erected a resting-place for the long lines
or caravans between the harbors of the
-Pacific and the waters of the Missouri,—
would, of themselves, interest all who are
witnessing the irresistible movements of'
civilization upon the American continent.
But this spot has other objects of interest I
Its geology and mineralogy, and I might
well say the chemistry aft. (ior there art,
laboritories and gases here in the greatest
profusion,) will hereafter occupy the atten
tion of the lovers of these sciences.
'The Soda springs (called by the fur tra
ders Beer springs) are the most remark
able objects of the kind within my knowl
edge. They are situated on the north
west side of the river, a few rods below r
grove of shrub cedars, and about 2'
yards from the shore. There are
groups of them; or, in other words •
are six small hollows, sunken a
feet below the ground around, of
fornu, seven or eight feet in diamet,
which there are a number of fountaim.
sending up large quantities Of gas and
water, and emitting a noise resembling the
boiling of immense chauldrons. These
pools are usually clear, with a gravelly
bottom. In some of them, however, grow
bogs or hassocks of course grass; among
which are very little wells, where the wa
ter bubbled/so merrily that I vvae tempted
to drink at one of them. But as I pro
ceeded to do so, the suffocating propensi
ties of the gas instantly drove me from my
purpose.
'After this.reboff, however, I made a
nother attempt at a more open fountain,
and drank with little dif f iculty. The wa
ters appeared to be more highly impreg•
nated with soda and acii than those of
Sat atoga; were extremely pleasant to the
taste, anj fumed f r om the stomach like
'he gotta from the shops. Some of them
tbrew off at least four gallons of gas a sec
ond. And although they throw up large
masses of water continuPlly, for which
there aPpe...red no outlet, yet, at different
times of observation, 1 eould perceive no
increase or diminution of the quantity visi
ble. There are five or six other springs
in the bank of the river just below, whose
waters resemble these I have desetibed.
