STEAMBOAT EX.LPLOSIONI
- LIVES LOST
Yesterday, between one and two o'.
clock, as the steamboat Cutter was back
i lig out from uur landing, she collapsed a
title which proved very disastrous in its
-cosisequences. The 2nd Engineer, Itn.
was killed on the spot, and the,
life Of the Ist, Joseph Hughes, wad des-
paired of. A man and woman, deck pas'
*angers, were severely injured, but it is
expected they will recover. The number
Of persons blown overboard is variously
elide' laced at from 6 to 12 or 14, and but
3 were picked up. It is supposed that
at least 4or 5 have been drowned. We
hive 'beard the names of none but the
~Engineers.
A part of the crew of the Manhattan

The second engineer was found dead

,box in which were a .it of hats, but
h were thrown out. He was blown a
great distance aft.
The cause of the accident is said by ri.
eer men to be the listing of the boat on the
larboird side which was caused by the
passengers crowding to that side. No
times is attached to the officers. She
was not supplied with Evans Safety
Guard.
P.S. Since the above was written we
lave received the following from the of
ficers on the boat:
Andrew frnaurin. 2d Engineer, dead.
Joseph Hughes, Ist Engineer, badly
scalded, but it is thought he will recover.
Colored fireman injured, not badly.
coliired fireman drowned.
A married woman (white) passenger
scalded, not badly.
The Captain thinks that these ate all
the casualties by the explosion.
The survivors of the sufferers are all
taken care of on board the boat.
There were boxes of chip hats blown
overboard; and their contents being scats
tered and floating about, it iv thcught has
given rise to mistakes, and to the report of
*event persons hay ng been drowned.
We are told that the engine in the
'Cutter is the old Richmond engine, this
being the fourth accident of the kind that
has occurred to it.
Eugene Gr andei, is the name of one of
the latest of the cheap publications. It is

Do not forget the interrsing, luclures

with 'mortality" both mum and female. The
Irish Greens, Capt Kane, turned out and looked
_remarkably well. There was lots of amusement

It was generclly remarked yesterday that there

on many good man were candidates. We could
bare toted cheerfully fur every one of them. It
is something uncommon.
