Mr. JOHN DENNINO:—Dear ing been present,
yesterday, at the experiment which you were pleased 10
make, in the presence of a number of our bodiless men,
of t lie safety of your IRON CHESTS, in casts of ire, It
gives me pleasure to say, that so far as I was tumble of
judging, the test was fair, and the result exceeded my
expectations.
The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by
about 18 or 20 Inches in breadth and depth, and was pia•
red on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, so as
to elevate it about that height from the ground; several
books and newspapers were deposited inside of It, in the
manner in which Merchants and others would usually I
place them—a large quantity of light pine wood (slabs
from an adjoining Saw Mill.) was then placed amend
and above it, and the fire kindled On the windward side,
so as to drive the dame against the back part of the chest.
The fire was kept up about three quarters of an hoar,
until you had gone among the spectators and received
from them their universal answer that the test was
sufficient. The chest was then drawn out of the 111 , 6,
and cooled, and opened, and examined. The contents
were all safe, and the only injury done was lathe hack
of one hook which appeared to be a little charred. From
what I witnessed, I think that these chests are desery
Ing of confidence, as affording, perhaps, the best security
to Merchants for their books and papers, which they tan
have without building large, thick, aud expensive vaults.
I would consider them a better secarity t han many vaults
which I have seen built. Your friend,
SAMUEL CHURCH.
We concur in the above statement, having been pres
sent when the chest was tested.
