Pittsburgh, Jilue 13, 1839 Mr. Mitti PENNINCE—Dear Sir—Having been present, yesterday, at the experiment which you were pleased to make, in the presence of a numher of our husinea. men, of Ihe safeiy or your I RON CHESTS, in ease of are, it gives me pleasure to say, that so far as I was capable of Judging, the test was fair, and the result exceeded my expectations. The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by about 18 oi 2O inches in breadth and depth. and was pla• ced,on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, so as to elevaie it about that height from the ground; several hooks and newspapers were deposited inside of it, In the manner in which Merchants and others would usually place them—a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs from an adjoining:Saw Mill,] was then placed around and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward side, so as to drive the flame against the back part of thechest. The fire was kept tip about three quarters of an hour, until you had gone among the spectators and received from them their universal answer that the test was sufficient. The chest was then drawn out of the fire, and cooled, and opened, and examined. The contems were all safe, and the only injury done was Lathe hack of one book which appeared to be a little ctiarred. From what I witnessed, I think that these chests are descry in; of confidence, as affording, perhaps, the hest security to Merchants for I heir books and papers, which they can have without tinitiling large, thick, and expensive vaults. I would consider them a better security than many vault, which I have seen built. Your friend, SAMUEL CiIURCIL %'e concur in the above statement, having been pres 'cult when the chest was tested. W.
