Pittsburgh, hi Mr. ions Pest-um—Dear firrn prr•.ent. yesterday. at the experiment which you were pleased to make, in the presence of a number of our bunness men, of the .afttly of your IRON CH ESTS, in case of fire, 0 gives me pleasure to say, that so far as I was capable of Judging, the leit was fair, and the result exceeded my expectations. The Chest Was a small one, about 30 inches high, by about 13 or 20 inches in breadth and (kWh, and was pla ced on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, so as ho elevate it about that height from the ground; several books and newspapers were deposited inside of It, in the manner in which Merchants and others would naually place them—a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs from an adjoining Saw Mllill,j was then placed around and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward side, so as to drive the flame against the hack part of I lie chest. The fire was kept up ahont three quarters of an hour, until you had gone among the spectator's and received from them their universal answer that the lest was sufficient. The client was then drawn out of the fire, and cooler!, and opened, and examined. The contents were all safe, and the only injury done was to the back of one book which appeared to be a little charred. From what I witnessed, I think that these rhestanre desery ing of confidence, as affording, perhaps, thc best security to Merchants for their hooka and papers, which they can have without building, large, thick, and expensive vaults. would consider them a better secarity than many vaults which I have seen built.
