The Chest was a small one, about 30 inches high, by about IS or 20 inches in breadth and depth, and was pla ced on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, su as to elevate It about that height from the ground; several hooks and newspapers were deposited inside of It, In the manner in which Merchants and others would usually place them—a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs from an adjoining Saw Mill,] was then placed nronnd and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward side, sons to drive the flame against the back part oft he cheat. The fire was kept tip about three quarters of an hour, until you had gone among the spectators and received from them their universal answer that the test was sufficient. The chest.was then drawn out of the Are, and coaled, and opened, and examined. The contents were all safe, and the only injury done was to the back of one book which appeared to be a little charred. From what I witnessed, I think that these chests are desery lag of confidence, as affording, perhaps, the best security to Merchants-for their books and papers, which they can have without building large, thick, and expensive vaults. I would consider them a better security than many vaults which I have seen built. Your friend, SAMUEL CHURCH. We concur In the above statement, having been prey sent when the cheat was tested.
