The Chest was a small ore, about 30 inches high, by about 18 or 20 inches in breadth and depth, and was pla• ced on a block of wood about a foot in thickness, so as to elevate it about that height from the ground; several hooks and newspapers were depostted inside of It, in the manner in which Merchants and others would usually place them—a large quantity of light pine wood [slabs from an adjolningSaw Mili,l was then placed around and above it, and the fire kindled on the windward sons to drive the flame against the back part of lie chestside., The fire was kept np about three quarters of an hour, until you had gone among the spectators and received from them their universal answer that the test was sufficient.
